Default What is the flow rate of the LS1 oil system?

I'm building an oil cooling system for my car. One of the lines has a check valve in it and is rated for about 5.5-6 gallons per minute (GPM) with a pressure drop of 1psi.

I want to make sure that the flow rate of the oil system isn't a LOT more than 5.5 GPM. Does anyone have a figure for this one? If it matters, I'm talking about the flow of oil that exits and enters the ports on the driver's side of the block just above the oil filter.

Thanks,

-ch

I don't know the flowrate of the LS1 system, but I would guess it's about 7 gpm, so I think you're in the ball park. I've seen engines as high as 20 gpm, but that was a crazy application.

There's got to be a GM engineer around here who knows for sure.

I should mention that the check valve is a 1/2" NPT from McMaster. It has Viton seals which is why I chose it. It's this part:

Assuming that the specific gravity of oil is about 0.9, these valves will have 1 psi drop at 6 GPM which seems reasonable.

I just want to make sure I'm not choking off my oil system with this part.

A typical oil specific gravity is 0.73 to 0.78. I'm not sure how that affects your check valve selection, though.

Ah, even better. It means the valve is rated at 6.2 GPM at 1psi of pressure loss.

But I'd still like to know what the LS1 is rated at for flow!

can't get the link to work but what you could do (if you figure it will be a major restriction)is to split off the line run two of them and merge it back togather

Late 90's testing put the iron engines at 2.5 gpm at 230F oil with engine rpm at 6000rpm. At the same rpm/temp the aluminum 5.7 eng flowed 6.5 gpm.
