Default cam install help!!!

Okay...I am a little worried about just pulling the cam out and relying on the lifter trays, so I bought some 5/16 steel rods. I can only get them in about 1/3 of the way!! Should I file the end of it down like you do with the motor mount bolts? Or do I have a lifter in the way or what? I am not going any further tonight until I can figure this one out. ANY HELP WOULD BE AWESOME! THANKS!!!

Anyone? Would filing the tool to a point help? How do I know if I have a lifter that wont stick in the trays?

brake line is your friend. i had an issue with the jpr tool not working for me correctly on the right side due to a little extra casting inside. used some slightly smaller than 5/16th brake line and right side went right in. drivers side slid in no problem so no brake line used.

I am having issues with both sides. The brake line sounds like a good idea, but I wont be back at Advance until I go in to work at 12:30. Do you think filing the end down to a point would help?

if you push down on the pushrods and turn the cam do you feel the lifter? need to get them all up and out of the way. we also used a pen magnet on a few that didnt want to go up, lift with the magnet and slowly slide the dowell further in. one side of the dowell needs to be flat, if its completely round not sure if it will go in.

I just did my cam swap tonight and used 5/16 wooden dowel rods. Worked like a champ.

Maybe thats my problem. Its still round. The only thing I have done with it is cut it so that its just a little longer than the cam.

I think I am gonna go to bed and try some more tomorrow. I've got one pen magnet, and I guess I am going to go to each lifter. If they still wont go in then I will file the front down to a point. If that doesnt work then I guess I'll have to file a flat spot on each one. I know its really tight puting them in.

Yes one side should be flat. Shaped like a letter "D". This is the way the JRP tool looks. Good luck you still have a ways to go! Fun fun times!

Well, I gave the rods a point with the grinder, then put a flat spot all the way down them, and they went in like buddah. Just a few spins of the cam and thats all it took. Thanks ya'll!
