Default MTI R1, Thinking about a change.....

I currently have a MTI R1 (232/236, .575/.578, 114). It was in the car when I bought it, and now I am thinking about a change. I was wondering if anybody has any info about whos lobes are used and if it would be worth it to switch to somthing like a 231/237 Speed Inc cam or similar. I dont want to go much bigger if at all, but I think this cam is leaving a lot on the table.

Looking for any first hand experience or people who have made the switch to or from. I did a search and didnt find much.

The R1 uses old school lobes that give lots of duration at .006". If you went with a Comp XFI, XE-R or LSK lobe, you could run a much bigger cam at .050" and have the same duration at .006" or you could run the same duration at .050" and have lots less duration at .006", giving you smoother street manners.

That is mainly what I was thinking about. For being a medium sized cam it acts a lot bigger at idle and leaves a little to be desired up top. Any recommendations? I dont really mind the street manners it has if it made more power, it is rarely driven to work anyway.

Default R1

I've had this cam for a couple of years. For some reason, my combo is a turd. It made 384/375 with heads and all the bolt ons. I don't blame the cam...yet. I'm changing some things around soon and hopefully will find my missing HP.

By todays standards, the lobe technology is not the best, but the relatively lower lift is easier on springs. My 373's leave a pretty big flat spot if you launch lower than 4500rpms. It only trapped 115. If I could do it again, I'd go with a cam and combo that has been proven and a no brainer. It sounds good, though. It'll still scare old ladies, children and pets. Have you dyno'd or run the car at the track? Have you had a similar experience?

Yes, and it didnt do well on either one. My traps were extremely low and my ET's were high. It only did 330 with an open cut out, LT's, LS6 intake, Lid, etc. No pulley or ported TB, but still very low. The motor has been checked through and everything is fine.

O and the lobe seperation angle might have something to do with that, I dont know much but generally cams with make more power with a tighter lsa, which equates to more valve overlap, if Im not mistaken, im sure someone will correct me if im wrong.
