Default Ultimate "bolt on" combo?

Just got my 396/tranny motor out, quite a job when you're working by yourself. Engine+tranny came out the top without much trouble.

Anwyay until my new juice engine is ready I'm going to putt the car around with a stock '00 shortblock. I figure I might as well make a few passes with it. What is the best stock set of heads available? Are the 2001/2 heads better than the 1998 heads? I have the stock cam from my '01 so I figure I'll swap that in before I put the motor in. Any other ideas for "bolt on" tricks while I have the engine out? I figure with my TP4500/4.10 combo @ 3250# raceweight I should be able to run at least 11.50 with a bolt on engine.

I've heard that some of the 02 heads are better in stock form in that they don't have as much excess casting material.

Ditto... I've heard they do flow a tad better...

Terry, did you find a buyer for your motor?

will it really be a bolt on car if you put all the best parts from every engine in one motor?

Larry I would say NO its not..
Not taking anything away from Terry but putting a bunch or parts together to go for the bolt on record wouldnt be fair to guys that have untouched or assembled shortblocks.I know Terrys not saying he wants to go for the record or anything but I just believe someone could cam a stock shortblock or clean up a set of heads and say its stock.

I know I wanna try something new this yr and it wont be with ported heads and a big cam.I wanna go back to a bare bones kinda setup, just to see how fast I can go too.I like Terrys approach, its something thats fun and wont cost too much coin.

My goal is to run 11.30@119 with a cam only setup at 3500lbs
And I'm gonna try to do it with a fairly small cam.

Terry I have a few fancy stock camslaying around here. Ones that would likely make a little more power than your average stock cam

Email me if interested in trying one

Wouldn't it be better to use a cam from a 99-00 as they were more aggressive "stock" than the truck cam in the 01-02?

I bet a lot of people do that sorta thing. If you threw a LS6 cam in a stock shortblock who would know? I'm not going for the record just want to have some fun until I get the new motor ready.
