Default Head and Head Gasket Question?

The complete head gasket from GM just came in, and I was curious why my stock 02' heads do not have the metal gaskets that I received in the kit from GM? I take it they started doing it late in 02'? These gaskets are thicker than the stock ones correct? If so, I am doing a Stage 2 head package with a 224/224 .581 114lsa cam with every possible bolt on with yank 3800 stall.......anyways the question...I am possibly thinking about nitrous this fall, but should I go ahead and have the heads milled .030 now? How much gain will that give me right now? Also, with hooker longtubes, should I use the new metal manifold gaskets from GM or the Mr. Gasket manifold gaskets that were purchased already? One more question.....Do you just torque these metal gaskets according to spec, or is there a special way to get them to seal good? Thanks!!

I am about to slap mine on as well but I need to know if anyone could help me on this. BTW Nice setup on the way there tyler

Thanks Damon!! I have heard about yours also!! I can get the torque specs to you by tomorrow evening around 6pm. Did you already buy the gasket kit? If not, let me know and I will get you one for what it costs me, and I can have it you within a week. These head/cam projects start to get really expensive with just all of the little things involved! I wonder how much hp milling the heads .030 would give me?

TTT!!!

Do you just torque these metal gaskets according to spec, or is there a special way to get them to seal good? Thanks!!

....Yes. The torque them the same.
need some help? Here ya go.
1. I put a dab of assembly lube on the bottom of the head of the head bolts. 15mm head bolts come with thread sealant already on them.

Install the head bolts, the 4 short M-11's you have go in the upper right and left corners of the heads. After installing all the head bolts. Torque all of the M'11's(one through 10) to 22 ft pounds following the above pictures order. Draw a line on all them at the 12 o'clock position. This will help keep your orientation if you slip with the angle torque gauge. First step after you have torqued them all to 22 ft pounds and drawn your line is to angle torque them in order, 90 degrees. Do this to bolts 1 through 10.

The black line on all the bolts should go from a 12 o'clock position to a 3 o'clock position. (see below)

Then on the second pass, torque the bolts 1-8 another 90 degrees, but bolts 9 and 10 (the small ones on the ends) only go 55 degrees.

The black line on bolts 1~8 should go from a 3 o'clock position to a 6 o'clock position on the second pass.

The black line on bolts 9~10 should go from a 3 o'clock position to about a 5 o'clock position. (or there bout's)

Put some thread sealant on the M-8 head bolts and install them in the top holes on the head. Then snug them up. And torque them from the middle outward at 22 ft pounds.

Repeat the process for the other head.

The above picture is what position the bolts should look like in the finished position. The top left and right head bolt should be at a 5 o'clock (5~5:15) or so position and the rest of the BIG bolts should be at a 6 o'clock position.

Next up is are the rockers. Install the 16 pushrods in their holes, and install the rocker arms.

With the engine in the Number 1 Firing Position, tighten the following rockers.

Exhaust valve rocker arm bolts 1, 2, 7, and 8 first to 20ib-ft then to 24 lb-ft

Intake valve rocker arm bolts 1, 3, 4, and 5 to 20lb-ft then to 24 lb-ft

Rotate the crank 360º and tighten the following rockers:

Tighten exhaust valve rocker arm bolts 3, 4, 5, and 6 to 20 lb-ft then to 24 lb-ft

Intake valve rocker arm bolts 2, 6, 7, and 8 to 20 lb-ft then to 24 lb-ft

You may have to shim the rockers if the heads have been milled. Mine had to be shimmed up 45 thous. Place the shims under the rocker shaft. On each pedestal is where the rocker shims go. The long flat mounting base bar that the rockers go on..... mounts on TOP of the shims.

Use a small dab of grease to get the rocker shims to stick together and on top of the pedestals.

First try and install a couple of rockers with out the shims. If the rocker takes more than a turn and a half after you screw down the rocker bolt.... you need to shim it. If your heads have not been milled, you wont have to shim the rockers. Or you shouldn't have to.

On some of the larger aftermarket springs you may need to clearance the rockers....don't forget to check this. Make sure the spring retainers are not hitting the valve covers either.

Or read more about it on my web page...

Tyler, they have a newer gasket for 2002 that is thicker (.060) than the old ones (.056) and is only for 2002-2003. You could also use the old style for those heads if you choose. Raugh has it pretty straight foward about the torque sequence.
