Default need right size head bolts

Hey guys, my mechanic just put my engine in my car and is trying to finish putting it together but he is having problems with the head bolts. I have a 2001 trans am and the block I got was a brand new ls6 block. He took the bolts off of my car I'm assuming, or he ordered 2001 bolts, and they don't fit. He said my year, the bolts go in about 6 inches and this new block, they only go in about 2 inches. Is this most likely a 2006 ls6 block or are the head bolts different for a 2001 ls1 and a 2006 ls6?

Yes, I believe the change took place in 2004. Now all the head bolts are shorter, not just the end ones...

ok, my mechanic has tried the bolts for an ls6 block for 2001 and 2006 and they wont fit...they are too long. I just don't want to order some bolts and have them be the same and not fit. Has anyone had this problem before?
