Default Cam question for Ca. members

What is the largest cam and lsa that can be installed based on experience and still pass smog after tuning and who tuned it. Tia

It's overlap that you're concerned about (LSA isn't the only factor that plays into that equasion) but the general rule for Cali members is the TR224 on a 114 LSA to keep it smog legal (still need cats). Most people run LTs, highflow cats and whatever else (need someone to overlook the visual if you have headers) and make about 380ish to the wheels keeping it smog legal with supporting boltons.

FYI: ANY mod that moves the cats away from the stock location is ILLEGAL in CA. I'm just talking about passing SMOG - IF someone will overlook the visual test.

agreed. the 224 on a 114 will be your best bet. i also heard of a few 224 on a 112 lsa passing.

i've heard texas speed 228r (228/228 .591/.591 ) on a 114 passing smog. but if u want to pass smog cleanly, i suggest the tr224 on a 114

I'd go with the TR224 as well. Its a proven cam.

These cams are on third gen L98 cars but I know of 225 and 226 degree cams passing smog with no problems. They are on 113 lsa's. The tune is the key to the cams passing.

I was considering using this cam along with some Rhoads lifters to get me through smog. I got a deal on an XER273 cam with 224 / 230 on 114 LSA, so I might just stick with that because I have it. As far as overlap goes, at 0.050" lift, the TR224 on a 114 has -4deg, and on a 112 it has 0deg. The XER273 I got has -1deg, and the 228R on a 114 has 0deg. I would think that if a TR224 on 112 will pass with a good tune, then the 228R on a 114 would do the same.

I posted the question on the corvetteforum also and it seems that LG Motorsports has a g5x1-e cam that is pretty aggresive that makes quite a bit of power and will pass smog in Cali with a good tune. A member dynoed 470 rwhp at Synergy with the g5x1-e, AFR 205's, Tony Mamo ported Fast 90 w/ls2 tb, ud, LGM street headers. I called LG Motorsports and they said with L92 heads on a 346 and supporting mods through LG pro headers w/cats they have dynoed 490 rwhp and the cam will pass smog in Cal. Impressive. The cam is on a 115 lsa but otherwise LG wouldn't give more specs...said it was secret. It is a little larger than their base g5x1 on a 112 or 114 lsa but i believe comes in at -2 overlap. It is more aggresive than the TR 224 on the lobes and lift with more duration according to LGM and will make more power.

From what I've read on here you need -6 to -4 overlap to pass, any higher such as -2 or +2 will not pass.

Same here! Paid $160 and Passed w/long tubes and no cats. Simple as that.I'm Also looking for a Cam for a DD SS. I been reading most people go under the curve. I only street race and track it twice a year. I keep hearing MS3-4 , ASR, and Trex to name a few. Any suggestions?
