Comp Cams 918 spring broke......
Props to Thunder for getting me the patriot "extreme" golds here quick to get my cam in.
918's are going back to summit. Just glad i caught this because they were ordered and goin on this weekend.
Being a ls1tech junkie may have saved me a motor <T-shirt idea
Well i finally got time to swap out my crap 918's to PAC 1518's . Well
the second i pulled my valve covers i noticed the spring pictured below
My batch number was 49826 and i purchased these
918's in october 06' . Here is another victim to add to
the list of broken Comp Cams 918 beehives

I can tell you thoughthat there is quite a difference just by looking at the PACs and 918's
next to each other . The PACs look and feel a whole lot better in quality
than Comps 918's .
I had no idea about the defective springs until this happened. Why didn't Comp notify their customers!?
I know I'm bringing this thread back from the dead, but I just had a spring break on me while test driving a car I'm looking to buy. The motor didn't lock up, it felt like it lost a cylinder, but still idled and drove. I flew back home not purchasing the car, but am still interested in it. The owner said he found a broken spring after finding zero compression in one of the cylinders.
I was confused about which springs to replace with (I'm an LSx newb, and the car has GTP ported 5.3L heads on it.. not sure if all LS-based heads had interchangeable springs), so I emailed TSP about a suggestion.
Jon @ TSP suggested I pick up a set of Comp 918's as they will just drop in and work with my current TSP .589/.589 cam.
Has this spring breakage issue been resolved? I have half a mind to go with the Patriot Golds from ws6store, but don't want a noisy valvetrain and heard that duals are noisy. I certainly don't want a BROKEN valvetrain

Are comp 918's okay again?
putting in a set of 918's . If you do youll always be wondering if your springs
are gonna break
PAC's are better quality and the piece of mind is worththe extra $$$

I never saw Comp publish a bulletin or notice on the cause of the defect and corrective actions taken to prevent a recurrence. Therefore, when it came time to buy springs I narrowed the list to PSI and PAC.
By way of comparison, PAC had one glitch in a specific batch of their 1518 springs and was all over it. Very public and up-front about the error, and emptied their supply chain of the defective lot #s.
