Mobil 1 question :(
For the last 5 years of owning my SS i have been using Mobil 1 5w30. It has always been a great oil (so i thought). After reading a couple of different threads about the Grade or quality of Mobil 1 going down i was very dissapointed as being a loyal Mobil 1 user.
Can someone please explain to me what exactly has changed in the Mobil 1 formula which makes it so crappy compared to its former self . just remember i am not an oil expert(im also looking for actual articles because when i do a search on google i cant find anything about - probably for good reason as Exxon does not want anyone to know).
also, i am thinking of switching to Valvoline Syn Power 5w30. does this sound like a good choice or is there something better out there for the LS1. i live in Canada so no 40 or 50 weight.
thanks in advance.....

They went from a Basestock IV to a Basestock III.
In the states they can still call it a full synthetic. Wouldn't be able to in Europe though as I understand it.
I switched as well.
Went to 10w-30 Pennzoil Platinum.

I use Mobile 5-50 performance oil, it doesn't have the starburst symbol, so it has more zinc than the "new car formula" oil. The reason for reducing the zinc is to help prevent the cats from clogging before the emission warranty expires. As all cars use some oil.

Mobil 1 5W-30 is 11.0 @ 100 C* cST.... so it's not exactly thin. a 30wt ranges from 9.3 to 12.49. So it's not that bad. Acutally Amsoil's are a bit thinner at 10.6. I'd still pop for Amsoil because I'm paying for Group IV and getting Group IV, not paying for Gorup IV and getting Group III
Skip the Valvoline, it's probably no better than M1 if not worse. If you don't want to run a xW-40 because of the coldness, then Amsoil's ASL 5W-30 would be a good choice. It's 100% synthetic. Don't get the any of their XL line - while still as good or better than M1 I've heard that they use Group III base stocks (highly refined/modified dino oil) versus their other lines that say "100% synthetic" are Group IV. Also one of their EaO Oil filters would be a good choice.
Go do some hanging out at www.bobistheoilguy.com if you want be overwhelmed with oil information... but it's kinda fun
