tr244 question
how good is the tr224/224 114 in a ls1? like what is the average hp gain from it? how good is it driving it on the street? is it a hard cam to tune? and what all will i need for it to work in my car?
TR224 is a great DD/Street cam.
I put down 380rwhp 370rwtq with that cam only + bolt ons
Great street manners
Easy to tune. Will drive OK with out a tune, but needs to be tunned for power.
Same things you need for every cam install. Springs, pushrods, etc.,

1) stock rockers are generally fine and you should never really upgrade them to a different ratio... stick to the 1.7 stock.. check em out real good though.
2) what year is your car? mileage? with high mileage you might consider a oil pump ( LS6 generally 95-145$ ) and timing chain ( LS2 generally 35$ ).
3) For maximum gains consider longtubes, LS6 intake, P&P TB, etc.
4) As far as the TR224 in an LS1... it is pretty much the most popular cam for the LS1, generally the best starter or mild cam. With the 112LSA it sounds great too, whereas the 114LSA can still pass a sniffer test with good tuning.

I just installed it a few weeks ago, and it drives great on stock tune. Im gonna get it tuned soon though for more power. Awesome street manners, I can barely tell a difference, but I have a 4000 stall so that helps.
Its a nice cam with alot of under the curve power, opposed to the peak numbers that unless you drag race you will never see.

I would definitely recommend tuning for the 112 version at least.
Without any tuning I'm sure there would be some startup and idle issues on a stock tune. But then again, it might depend on what you're willing to deal with.

like I said go by mileage... its a cheap upgrade seriously 35$. If your motor has more than like 80,000 on it I would reccomend it. The oil pump is also a good idea with higher mileage. I did both as cheap insurance. A lot of people with lower mileage LS1's do it either way for peace of mind.
The 114 LSA has a better chance of passing the sniffer test with A GOOD TUNE!! but there is no guarantee its all on how good your tuner is.
Take a look in the parts classifieds for an LS6 intake manifold and consider that and a ported & polished throttle body and a lid obviously. Generally those will run the following:
Used LS6 Intake Manifold - 300-350$ (really is worth it with a cam)
Port & Polish Service - 60-90$ (Bo White did mine for 75$... great job too)
Lid - 100$ (no brainer, just get one haha)

Do you know for a fact that they sniff all cars in your state? Here they just Scan it and check the gas cap. I had my EGR AIR and rear O2's tuned out, and it passed with flying colors just 2 weeks ago. If all they do is scan, and do maybe a visual, then you should be able to get through with a good tune.

I have some engine simulation software which may help you choose a cam, let me know the cams you want to check against. I also have Patriot head flow numbers which helped me choose what heads and cam to go for to best suit my needs.
Stock Cam
TR224 Cam
Numbers are Flywheel power, need to take of about 17% for manual transmission and more for Auto to get your RW power.
Dont use the figures as to being spot on, but you can see the difference between stock cam and the TR224.
