Default Updating 98 Knock Sensors?

I keep hearing the 98 sensors are prone to false knock, what would it take to update them to a newer year? and are all the 99+ sensors the same?

Did your knock sensor have a locating tab for the harness connector or just a smooth round plastic top?

Zapp,

'98 models are prone to knock compared to the later years. To fix this problem I had Nick Williams Performance install new 2002 ZO6 knock sensors on my car prior to him tuning it with HP Tuners. With the tune with my QTP's I show absolutely no knock at all anymore. Just go to the Scoggin Dickey or GMPP website and look for the part number. Each sensor was around $50...$100 for both at the time.

I have not removed them yet, is the only difference going to be the plug connector? Are they physically the same as far as mounting?

1. Yes. Requires different connector/harness.
2. Yes. The valley cover is the same from 98 thru 02.

During the 98 model year GM went from the 1st design to 2nd design knock sensor. Your car may have the newer knock sensors. Last September GM did change the part number on the 2nd design knock sensor.

Last week I did see a 98Vette with the 1st des sensors.

It would be interesting to see the stock tune files between identical year cars with same options with only difference being knock sensors, to see what was changed in knock tables. Can't jump up to 99 because the computer changed.

What do you mean can't jump up to 99? You mean compare the tune?

Can't compare tune - right. See this tread for differences between 97/98 and 99: http://forum.efilive.com/showthread.php?t=5387

You know what I do? I open the two dissimilar tunes next to each other and then switch back & forth takes time but works.

Hey I updated mine mostly because the dealer only had the new knock sensors. I had the old ones that had a tab on them and when I went to remove one the tab broke from the heat on the plastic. It retains the connection so it is pretty much required. The connection was simple to replace as the harness just plugs into where you unplug the old. I never knew there was a good reason to do it I just figured updating would help if I blew another knock sensor in the future.
