Default Help with 6.0L budget build

I am hoping for around 450rwhp in a 79 Z28 with a M6. It has the stock 10 bolt with 3.42 posi. I have a bone stock 01 LQ4 with 58k miles. Car is not DD but needs to be comfortable on the street. Wont really see any track time. Maybe alittle street racing with the kids. I am hoping to use the stock 317 heads, milled with alittle home porting. Was thing somewhere around a 230 duration cam with around 600 lift and 112LSA. What cam would be a good choice? Hoping to do a Fast 90/90 set up. Would like to do a 4" stocker crank down the road.

Another thought would be to use the L92/L76 head/intake combo. Do know much about it. I have heard some debate about cam choice with this set up.

I seriously need some expert advise. I can only afford to do this once.
Opinions/ advice NEEDED!

thanks

Here's a budget build that puts down great numbers:

Lunati makes some nice cams that are about 500 lift, and 216/221@.50". I don't know if that's too small for you, but I think that's real good for our engines with a compromise between streetability and power. As far as heads go, the L92s work wonders. There's also really no need for an LS1/6 style intake because they really are only benefitial up top, meaning only at or above ~6000RPM. For your needs the truck intake will be just fine. Correctly tuned, these mods should take you into the 430-450hp range. My 2 cents.

I really dont think a 216/221 cam with stock truck intake is going to get me 450 rwhp. I've heard the truck intakes arent all bad. Has anyone used one?

How much do I have to mill the 317 heads to get 10.5 to 1 compression with the stock pistons? Is there thinner gaskets to raise compression?

It would be better for you to trade the 317s for some 243s than milling the 317s. I don't know the dish of the factory LQ pistons off the top of my head, but here's the milling information:

Simple Milling Math:

You have a stock 66cc chamber and you want to get down to 63cc

66-63 = 3. You have to remove 3cc's

.007 x 3 = .021. So to get your 66cc chambers down to 63cc you'd have to mill ~.021.

You can also do the reverse, say you want to mille a head .030 to figure out how many CC's that removes you take .030 / .007 = ~ 4.28. Milling a stock 5.7 head .030 puts your chamber at ~ 62.

Don't be afraid of compression, the more the merrier.

Granted you aren't shooting for 500rwhp, but read this it'll help you out on your build. The things in here are good ideas to think about whenever you are builiding an engine.

the thing I dont like about the carcraft combo is that the L92 heads and bigger cam didnt outperform the stock heads and smaller cam until 5k rpm. I would have liked to see the bigger cam with the stock heads and the L92 heads with the smaller cam. Anyone have any thoughts?
