Default Magnaflux and stress cracks

I was talking to a guy about his crankshaft in his upcoming build, and he said it needs to be turned because it has "microscopic cracks that are only detectable through magnaflux". Well, I told him I think that it's junk, and his response was,

"The crank is usable. If you ever hear of guys having their stock cranks 'polished' or 'turned', this is the same thing. It's not useless, it's quite usable in it's current condition. But a polish or turn will remove the microscopic stress cracks seen under magnaflux."
So what's everyone's take on this?

sounds fne to me. you can turn a crank 10 over and be fine, hell even more than that sometimes and just use oversized bearings. cranks get very tiny cracks and by taking off the outer most layer you remove the flaws.

Nice. Only problem now is if I build a 383, my milled heads will have too much compression. Dang it! What heads are being used with 383's lately?

No, you keep the heads and compensate with piston reliefs.

Good point. I'm calculating though that I'd still have a DCR of 9.25 if I kept my heads (243's milled .030") and had 4cc valve reliefs. I guess I could even go with a slight dish, so that later I could put on truck heads and a procharger. Would dished pistons be a horrible idea with a 383?
