Default Oil pump w/ cam install

Is it necessary to upgrade to a ported ls6 oil pump or other high volume/high pressure oil pump when doing a cam swap? right now my oil presure sits a little above 40 on idle but stays around 55-60 while driving normally and increases some when at WOT.

Yes. Do it now. I didnt and the last cam swap I done on my car my oil pump went out the next day. Seriously. They are under a 100 bucks at SDPC.

Its easy to swap it while everything is torn down anyway, I'd do a double roller to. Make sure you buy a new o ring for the oil pump tube incase you pinch it taking it off!

I'm gonna go against the grain here and say no, it's not necessary, unless maybe you have an 00 model or older, that doesnt have the factory installed LS6 pump, or a high mileage car.

I don't run a ported pump on my car, and the pressure is better than it needs to be anyhow. Always around 45 psi at idle, and at WOT, it climbs to around 75 or so. That's more than enough.

99 car? No question IMO I'd do it. I did a melling with my cam install and it was improved greatly over the stock 109k mile piece. Careful with the o-ring!

so I would just need an ls6 oil pump? not one that is ported. the only thing I see at SDPC is just an ls6 oil pump/non ported and another one that is 30 bucks cheaper

I got the high volume one that is 30 bucks cheaper and works like a charm
