Default Long block and short block difference?

Please teach me...

what exactly is the difference between short-block and long block? I understand LS1 in my '99 z28 is a short block -? However, f.e. ARE offers long blocks as a replacement. Do they require different heads? I think I heard something about different bolt pattern, but still not sure if physical dimension, etc. are different. Why would I want to switch? Thank you.

a short block consists of block, pistons, rings, rods, crank, cam, mains, pretty much everything u need but the heads and intake, Long block is the complete motor all u need to do is drop it in. I think you are confusing short block with small block. Yes our LS1's are a small block.

That makes sense. So "long block" = "short block" + heads.
Thank you.
