Default LS6 cam?

Has anyone swapped their stock LS1 Camaro/Trans Am cam out for an LS6 Vette cam? If so, any hp/tq numbers? I want to take the damn truck-cam out of my car, because it's a BS Chevrolet restriction. I want to keep my car "stock", more or less, that's why I don't want to go to a bigger, more lopey cam. Oh, and I tried a search already but the stuff isn't working for me today.

I would consider something other than an LS6 cam. The gains from that cam really arent worth breaking into the inside of your motor. I reccomend the CheaTR cam from TR if you want stock drivability. The numbers are in my sig. The high LSA of the CheaTR makes is pretty "stock" sounding, especially through my Borla non-adjustable. This car is my DD, and its a great cam for drivability, very good manners. The cam also makes good numbers with stock manifolds, as it was designed to do.

As far as numbers: my CheaTR put down 340/340 with lid, FTRA, LS6 MAF, and a pulley.... not too shabby, I think. I havent gotten new numbers for my LS6 manifold and p/p TB yet, im waiting to re-tune/re-dyno until i get my headers on.

Other good baby cams: TR " Old Man " cam, the MTI Stealth cam, and there are a couple others, I believe. I dont have any solid numbers for these cams though, so I cant comment on them.

-Hope this helps
Charlie

PS: cams are internal, so this should go into GENIII Internal, not external

It's definately not worth it to swap with an ls6 cam. If all you're worried about is the 'lope' of a cam then your main factor should be what lsa to go with. There are quite a few 'smaller' cams out there that can get you some good power gains with almost no lope and very little tuning.

I agree with these guys, one I had my 224/236 114 LSA cam I barely had a lope with the stock muffler, only a car buff would've known there might be something lurking inside. It loped real good with the cutout open, but very stealth with it closed, so I'd look for a bigger mild cam than the LS6.

Typical LS6 cam gains on a M6 car with headers and a LS6 intake. While it's not for everyone, I've never understood why people say it's a waste of time.

That chart looks pretty accurate, that's what I was guessing would be the result in swapping the LS6 in there. I know the C5 Z06 was rated at 405hp at the crank, so 360-370 at the wheels sounds right.

well, if your looking for a cam that idles at 600 rpm smooth with an A4 and no lope sound this cam is for you. ls6 cam 117 lsa, 550 lift 204 / 218 duration. i didnt want to lose any drivability but i cant say the gain was worth all the money / work to install. i wish i'd gone slightly bigger. just my 2 cents. ps any higher lift cam needs better springs.

There are definitely better choices out there which are very streetable. The main drawback to the LS6 cam is that the power really doesn't come on until 4000 rpm as clearly shown in the dyno printout. That is too high for a street driven car, especially if A4.

ls6 is good if you want to boost your car i would go with a mild cam it will still act like stock but you difently get some power out of it

My brothers 2002 Camaro LS1 with stock 241 heads(LS1) heads and kooks headers and borla exhaust 3.73 speed went 11.91 and made 377 RWHP and out runs about everyone of the small cam cars but it is tuned. Good cam and sneaky. The cam out of my motor is what he has and comp cam 918 springs and 7.40 pushrods. And you must have your rev limiter set up to 6300 to 6500 RPMs.

I made 376rwhp @ 361rwtq with an 02LS6 cam, stock 241's, LTs ORY, ASP, PTB, LS6 intake. Great daily driver cam and no noticeable lope over the stocker. The only thing I did not like was that power did not come on until 4500rpms compared the the stock cam. It's an all top end cam with it's valve events.

That's what I like to hear. There is a possibility I MIGHT supercharge my car down the road. I think I would be satisfied with the LS6. THanks for all the feedback!

You've probably heard enough but for posterity here are some of my numbers. I installed the GM LS6 cam with the #243 heads and did a NET hp/tq comparison using the g-tech performance meter. The lowest to highest gain was 35 hp and 17 lb-ft of torque. These numbers are NET, taking in the co-efficiencies so it is my assumption that they are all conservative. For instance, my dynojet numbers were 327 hp / 349 lb-ft of torque with a lid and loudmouth catback. I know that sounds high for two bolt-on mods but 3 pulls gave the same results. The g-tech net hp/tq numbers were 252/291 before the h/c swap and 287/308 afterwards. So roughly, the net hp/tq numbers have a ratio of about 77%. Using this scale my 35 hp increase can be multiplied by that factor or that 35 hp should equal 45-50 back on the dyno when factoring the drag co-efficiencies. It probably wouldn't work out that way but the crude math shows it. I know the heads are a big factor in the gain so I can't say for sure about the cam alone. Never the less, I can feel that 35 hp and 17 lb-ft of torque, especially in the higher RPM. Even if the cam alone is responsible for only 30% of those gains, I feel the money and the two weeks I spent doing the work was worth it.

BTW, I couldn't tell a thing at idle. The pcm could probably benefit from a tune but there was never a moment that I felt like the engine was significantly different until making a quick shift into 2nd gear and going wot. First time out I thought the clutch was slipping because the RPM stayed high but I felt no fishtailing. I guess as it turned out the tires were spinning on dry pavement after the 1-2 shift while going down the road at almost 40 mph. Sounds like but I'm still believing it....
