This might be a dumb question, but could I do a 408 block and reuse the trick flow heads and top end that I have now? Would the heads even line up to fit? I know they wouldn't flow as well, but it would be better than another 346.
They will line up, but you would be better off selling them and the cam and doing the 225s and a bigger cam on a 408. Your cam and heads would work well on a 370, and with a FAST 90. TSP has them on sale.

What up Bob? That might be a good idea. There are a ton of options out there, and unfortunatley, I have a while to decide.

Default o.e. cast piston?

o.e. cast piston? I noted .030 over... what kind is it? Also, what happened to 1 exploded piston is on the way to happening on the other 7. look them over closely for signs of the top land cracking, oil ring groove cracking, or pin boss tower cracking. You may want to have them magnefluxed.

IMO its better to start all over fresh...the money you could put into checking for cracks etc.. just fo find out your used wore, stock stuff is okay you could of have had a new forged set...but yea TSP 347 $2800 i think...and i beleive that thunder racing does a very similar deal...good luck...

i spun a rod bearing in my 99 block...went and bought a 01 Z28 long block from a member here in SC for like $1500...still runs great.

Moved from Advanced Tech section.

Your damage is very common among nitrous and boosted motors. I've seen it for years. Time to go forged.

I assume he is running the smaller Trick Flows. Ya Blake, the heads will fit any LS engine you decide on. But like Bob said the bigger heads are going to work better on something like a 408 and up.

Heads and cam are considered "boosted"?

Probably not detonation. Most likely a case of too much cylinder pressure for the stock hypereutectic piston that it fatigued and shattered. You were making a pretty good amount of horsepower.

Talked to McCord and the cheapest route would be to slap in a set of forged JEs, ARP rod bolts, bore the block +.007, re-ring and re-bearing the shortblock. You can find a used 5.7 block for around 150. You could then spin it even higher and take advantage of the heads and cam setup you already have. He also suggested bumping up the compression while you're at it to get you in the neighborhood of 11.5:1. Maybe even have the crank turned. Depends on what it looks like once you get it completely torn down.

Can't do that....there is a huge hole in the right side of the cylinder wall...look at my last pic I posted and you can barley see it from the angle.
