40 psi warm idle is in the norm for 98 - 02s ..sounds like you're at 25? I think that's low.... but gm spec is 10psi for every 1k rpm.

I'd be more worried about fluctuation then actual pressure. Did it used to be higher? does it fluctuate at idle? those are more important questions.

is your car an auto or manual?? My car sitting in park will hover around 40 PSI once its fully warmed up....this is with pennzoil platinum 5w30..but once i put it in drive and my idle speed drops to 500 RPM my pressure will sit at about 25 or 30..Its been like that since i got the car with 16K miles on it...its now at almost 121K..

40 psi warm... 35 or 30 is acceptable on higher mileage. also depends on the weight of oil.

mine idles at 40 and goin down the road.. say 2k its about 60...

If your oil pressuse is really that low, oil weight isn't the problem.

What i'd do is hook up a mechanical guage to your car to verify the pressure. It's possible your sender went bad, or the guage could be wacky itself.

If it went down overnight like you said and it's acutate, chances are its your oil pump taking a crap. could also be worn bearings, but that wouldnt happen overnight.

check it with a mechanical guage first.

good luck

No knocking or anything i'm guessing? If so, it's probably a bearing.

If not, i'd bet on the pump or sender. Either way, it's better to catch it now, then later and need a complete rebuild...

after you figure out what it is, if it happens to be the pump, it's a good excuse to get a cam since you basically have to do most of the hard part to change the pump anyways

Mine is about 60+ psi cold. Then over 40 psi warm. It's an 02. My LS6 is 55 cold and 32 warm. It's an 04.
