Default Engine whine.... part of the usual LS1 language or is something up?

Got a 99 WS-6 w/ about 70K on the clock. Ever since i bought the car, the engine seems to have been pretty noisy. I never paid much attention to it because it performed like a champ ('cept for the power steering but i'll get to that). It wasn't until i rode in my friends 00 SS (M6) that i started to worry. His didn't whine really at all and the steering was excellent (again, i'll get to the steering).

My car startup sounds fine. Once i start moving though in 1st gear, as the tach climbs the whine intensifies until i shift. 2nd gear isn't as bad but it still whines. I do have a bit of trouble with steering when the car is going slow. Takes alot more effort than needed to turn the wheel at low speeds (i usually have to use 2 hands, can't do the "palm spin" with mine). At low speeds when i turn the car whines even more. So i thought it could be the power steering... i check it but nothing seems wrong. Not to mention that wouldn't really explain why it whines when i'm driving in a straight line.

Transmission maybe? I would think unlikely because i had it taken in to a local car shop for a tune up (after i did my header install) and they checked all the fluids saying everything was as it should be.... still whines though.

Can't really think of any other way to give a better description of my problem so i'm just gonna ask straight up.... why does it whine?

Sounds to me like your power steering pump is shot.

Sounds like your power steering pump is going out, especially since you said it's worse when you're turning... I'd suggest replacing it before it locks up on you & causes more problems.

Mine has a whine as well, but it will do it in neutral. Actually sounds like it's coming from the back of the motor/intake area. I was wondering if I'm hearing a vacuum leak, like maybe the MAP sensor line is leaking or whatever the heck is on the back of the intake. Anyway, I haven't been able to figure mine out.

Remove your serpentine belt and start the car up and see if it goes away. If you no longer hear the whine you now know your power steering pump is going bad.

Duh, I'm an idiot, I dunno why I always thought the car would need the serpintine belt on too run, but I guess as long as it isn't running long, it doesn't need a waterpump or alternator, huh?

My 98 m6 z has whined since I bought it in 99 in low gears, 100k miles later no ill effects, except ac compressor died but still whines today, my rearend has had a leak for ever now but I have never seen any spill on the ground, but never had any problem with power steering either. I always liked seeing the look on mustang owners face when I cruised by in first, they must think i'm s/c because they freeze up like they saw a ghost as I pass by lol. I don't know what is causing it but I would sware it is coming from the motor area??

Oh my T56 has been anything but spectacular, It has needed a rebuild for couple years now and I'm still running factory clutch at 122k WTF?? I wonder if this has to do with the whine?? My t56 began giving problems on cold mornings shifting to 3rd, it would grind know matter what I tried. I'll find out soon since college is done and paid for and my car will be my new hobby. Good luck.

yes, but only in the 1st and 2nd gear, it pretty much fades in 3rd and up.

I have a 2001 LS1/T56 (75K miles or so) in my mustang and it moderately whines, increases with RPM until the exhaust drowns it out. Not terribly loud but it is audible. so far so good, no issues.
