Default Help me pick a cam for my 409

Well I am getting to the point where I have to pick a cam for my car. I am looking for something to make the car sing, nicely! In my 346 I had the TR224 112. I LOVED IT! I would recomend it to anyone looking for a cam. Now that the time has come for the new Alum Block motor to get a cam. I am thinking of 2 to start, but would like some input on what would be appropriate. I am looking for the most power I can get in a single pattern cam.
The options so far are Lunati 242 242 .595 112 $345
MTI S1 244 244 .612 112 $399
(MTI recomends this for 427 or LARGER CI? WHY?)
On any cam I will will running dual springs, but what I dont want to do is stretch the limits of those springs and risk failure. Safe is good now after the first motor let go. Any input from sponsors or addicts are welcome. I have ONE CRITERIA and that is that my head doesnt fall off from the shake! This is why I chose single pattern. Thaks for the help. Bear

Bear, I hear ya about putting a question here. IT seems all the n00bs with the same old questions get lots of responses while others just get over looked. Anyway I think the S1 cam would be perfect for your 409, I have a 243/250 .610/.612 114 lsa in my 388 all bore and it idles like a champ, so I think that the S1 would be a nice combo of power and reliability.

Wow, All I had to do was cry like a little bitch, and I get some good responses. LOL I think that Linear is on the mark. Linear, How is the Shake in your car. When I had the original G5, it was horrible. I almost got a concussion from the shake. My RV Mirror was useless. I am leaning towars the S1 myself.

I recall the S1 being pretty choppy in a 422...I'm sure it'll be a bit more in a 409

See thatw wierd. Linear says the huge split cam is FINE in his 388, but the single pattern S1 would be choppy? Is it the lift or duration that makes it choppy? This is y I Wanted opinions. What about the slightly smaller Lunati? Less lift & duration.

My S1 was hella choppy even with a 1050 rpm idle.

My prior 244/244//114 Lunati idled a lot better. I think the ramps were less aggressive but the valvetrain was a lot quieter too, not that sewing machine chatter of an XE-R lobe.

Well here is the deal from what I can tell: The 242/242 cam (which I have in my car now) does have less aggressive ramps than the S1...which in many ways is good -- less stress on the springs and valvetrain, and smoother idle. Probably gives up a bit in the power dept. though.

The 244 S1 has more agressive ramps, but I still cant see how it would be that bad in a 409 with the idle at like 1k rpm. This is what id recommend. if you dont like you might be able to bribe me to trade for my 242

It's the intake/exhaust overlap that makes them choppy. Has nothing to do with lift and only a little to do with single vs. dual pattern. This valve overlap is a funcion of intake duration, exhaust duration, lobe separation angle, and ramp style. The steeper ramps cut down on overlap for a given duration and LSA, but make more valve train noise (sewing machine sound.) The dual pattern thing makes the idle more random or chaotic, while the single pattern cam will lope with more of a rythum. Hey that's going to be a powerful engine, don't over-cam it and make it a PITA to drive!

Keep in mind Bear that PSJ and a couple others have autos which is genereally worse on idle than M6's. I think the ramps had something to do with it, it's an AAP custom cam so you'd need to call them and see what the exact ramp rates are like, I know they are pretty aggressive though. I also think that the 114 lsa has a lot to do with the idle quality too, maybe an S1 on a 114 would suite your needs better. Tuning has a lot to do with it too, AAP tuned my car and it idles/runs great, I'm sure JPR will do the same. And I don't think there is such thing as over-camming

I have an auto!! Dammit!! I called Lunati and they will custom gring anything for ya. I called MTI and they said it would be a little choppy, maybe more than I wanted. In all honesty I will probably get the Lunati cam. I am damm torn. As for my Edit session Mikey from Rapid is doing it. I will also call him and see what he thinks.

If you want idle quality why not consider a reverse split to reduce the exhaust overlap.
Maybe a 244/238 or 242/236.

what about that 242/242 comp with a 609 lift? Aggressive ramps on a 112, with no quite as much duration might work too...

Hey guys,
We just finished the cam install on Mr.WS6's 422 engine, 244/244/.630/.630 along with Yella Terra rockers, it sounds like Warren Johnsons car! completly sick! lope and idle qualities? well, the engine dosen't shake as much and it's actually smoother than the 236 that we just pulled out, go figure? Anyway, 242 is the highest I would go with for the 409 afer hearing/running this animal.

Joe.

Ahh, another item to add to my bigger is better list!= Cams!

Go big my friend

~244/252 112LSA with .6XX lift

What tranny are you running? If you are running a TH400 the cam size is the least of your worries as far as driveability is concerned
tuning makes a huge difference

Cheers,
Chris

I am looking at something like 258/262@.050 with .620lift on a 110LSA, but I am running a solid roller in my 408ci when all is said and done
