Talking A cam for lugging? (under 2k, anyway)

(Seriously, I'm in love with the ASA cam and have one waiting to be installed.)

But since 95% of my driving is a freeway drone to/from work at less than 1500 rpm, I was curious what cams you guys might know about that would be a boost for that. Maybe I should look into an RV cam.

Even though I'm semi-joking here, I would be interested to know of any cams that would still be a boost over stock power levels across the entire rpm range, but have their emphasis on basement torgue.

(No, I'm not driving that slow. 1500rpm in sixth works out to around 75mph in my car. And no, I'm not changing gears. I like being able to break 30mpg.)

Thanks,
Dan

I'm actually interested in this as well for my 5.3 LM7/4l65e powered trail rig.
Was looking closely at the TR220-114, appears that it would have good idle charateristics as it is but maybe better if installed a couple more degrees advanced.

I'd never put in anything lower than the tr224 but if you must contact patrick at Thunder and he can spec you one out or might have one off the shelf for ya that will suit your needs.

My bud had a vengeance x3 , 226/228 .58X lift with a tight stock stall and 2.73s and it drove no problem at low rpms, no bucking, even without tune. for some reason ls1s dont mind some cam. Im building my motor with an x3 and threw a 3k stal on it for fun

I run a tsp 233/239....doesnt really have low-end torque, but i run 55-60mph in 6th gear with 3.42's. Even at 1300rpm it maintains speed quite well... I think a tune is a big part of it.

The best cam for lugging? The stock one. Afterall, one of it's operating parameters is shifting to 4th under 25mph in the M6.

As far as a performance upgrade that still makes good power down low, be sure to check your ego and ***** envy at the door. Sub 220 @ .050 cams can still improve upon the stock powerband, if you go for the right VE's.

214/218 112+2 IVC 37* ABDC Overlap -8*
210/214 112+0 IVC 37* ABDC Overlap -12*
206/212 112+0 IVC 35* ABDC Overlap -15*

Some of these can be ground on more than one lobe, but the top two should give peak HP near the same rpm as the stock cam, not requiring you to rev it any higher than stock, and boosting the mid range torque. The bottom cam is probably better suited to the truck application.

I love my MTI Stealth II. Motor will pull in 6th at 1100rpm smooth as glass.

Check with Vinci, they do a lot of smaller cam grinds that fit what your looking for.

this cam would be too big for what you are wanting out of that 5.3... Look into a 210/216 on a 114 LSA, that'll be your ticket.

Blorton: this cam or the TR220 should work out really nicely in your car with more cubes and less weight though... you coulg even get it on a 112 or 111 LSA to bring the powerband down a little more.

Just looked at their truck cams. The 080 looks like it's in the spirit of some of the recommendations I'm seeing.
DUR @ .004" 272*/280*
DUR @ .050" 210*/218*
LIFT .551/.551

I would recommend something like a 206/212 on about a 115 LSA for a car. I'm running a 200/206 on a 109.5 LSA because it works so well for towing. That kind of cam would give you lots of torque down low, but I'd want something with a little more duration for those times when you did want to get more power/torque in the upper register.

A great daily driver cam is a 212/218 114 LSA, but it really wakes up around 3,800 RPM's and would not have the economy or low end torque of a 206/212 or smaller.

Wider LSA's smooth the powerband and generally raise the peak power RPM. Even small durations with wide LSA's make high RPM power (think LS6 cam)

Tighter LSA's concentrate the power in a tighter range, more dependant on the VE's for where that occurs (as in Steve's Towing example above)

Took out the guess work and had Patrick spec out a custom grind for my application.
