Default Help with choosing H/C combo

’02 Camaro SS 35th Anniversary LS1
LS6 Intake
Kooks LT’s, Catted Y and Stainless Works 3” exhaust
4L60E with a Vigilante 3200
3:73 Motive gears and T/A Stud girdle kit in an otherwise factory rear end
UMI Lower control arms, Pan Hard rod and torque arm
16x8 rear wheels with Hoosier Drag Radials (for racing only, the rest of the time I have Boyd Coddington wheels)

The car is a weekend toy that I drive to the local drag strip (1/4 mile) on Friday night, the golf course on Saturday afternoon and to church on Sunday morning. The rest of the time it sits in the garage with the cover on it. I have a small Comp Cam (214/222 559/566 115 LSA) in it now but I want to go to a bigger cam with heads. I am on somewhat of a budget and don’t have the funds for fly cutting pistons or any other machine work to the block.

I have been in contact with Comp Cams and they recommended a setup that does not require any machine work:

RHS Heads 54210-05 that have smaller valves 2.04/1.570 which will clear the pistons on a stock block
And a Comp Cam grind number 3725/3725 HR112 giving me 230/236 at 050 with 592/602 lift and a 112 lobe separation

I seen a car on here that had the kind of cam I am looking for but it was in a newer model Vette (see video below). My question for your expertise is;

What size cam would make the most for my LS1 engine that is similar to the one in the video, AND, what size heads would you recommend to compliment that cam?

Thanks!

I am amazed that someone at Comp Cams would ever recommend a cam of that size. To most of their tech gurus they would think that is a pro stock grind, and would never run on the street. Anyway, back to the topic. I do not think anyone is very familiar with the RHS heads (I think I have only seen one person on this board that has them and just a few others who considered them), so I do not know if anyone knows what kind of valve clearance they have. If they are fairly similar to the stock castings then I would suspect that camshaft will be cutting it close with a .040 gasket so you may have to run the stock gasket which will cost you some quench and compression. You might be better off going with a slightly smaller duration camshaft and then running a thinner head gasket.

I'm surprised at that cam recommendation. Lots of opinions on cams I guess.

I did and still do use a 224/228/114. Had it in my LS1 and will transfer it to my LS6.
Car made 404/388 rw before and we expect 430/400 on this motor.

It is streetable, good power and provides some peace of mind as to how the valve train copes (spring life, etc.)

I was more poking fun at the Comp guys, it seems they recommend "torquer/RV" cams for just about every application. When I called them about getting my cam ground they said that I could not use an LSK lobe on the street, those were for serious racing only.

So BOWTIE, is this combo not a good idea? I am new to cams & heads so thats why I started calling the manufacturers themselves. Comp was very helpfull in their advice but I am not sure of their recomendation so thats why I am on here asking for help or opinions.
I'm looking for an H/C combo that I can install over the weekend with little to no worries and then have it tuned during the week. I would like to make 450 RWHP if possible and would like to know what setup would get me in that aproximate range.
Thanks
Chad
ps: CaptainSS1, I like those 430/400 numbers. I would be very happy with that in my car!

I'm running a Torquer v3 and stage 2.5 5.3 heads, they're definatly a powerful budget setup. If i had the money i'd have gone with some afr's but my car really scoots with the current setup and i can't imagine myself changing it anytime soon.

Did you do any machine work to the block or pistons, fly cutting? Or was it strickly a "Bolt On" so to speak instalation? Any HP/TQ numbers?
Thanks!

i put new pistons and rods in the motor @ the same time i put the new heads and cam in, but i know people with the stock bottom end and the same setup, and required no machine work. it's a bolt on setup. the car made 385 to the wheels with my old 224 cam only setup and it pulls much harder now than it did then, no dyno numbers as of now but soon.

I am also thinking about new pistons as well, might get rid of that piston slap that I hate hearing.
If I want to fly cut the pistons, is there any directions on how to do that or does a machine shop know what that term means?
