Default head swap question

I'm putting some take off 243's on my car.

How should I clean off the old gasket gunk off the heads...and what do I do to clean the top of the block off?

thanks

I used a green scotchbrite pad, WD40 and B-12, with alot of elbow grease.

If you use any kind of scraper take care not to accidentally gouge the head or the block. Elbow grease and a scotchbrite is my method as well.

I very carefully used a razor blade and a burgandy scotchbrite pad. A GM tech told me the other day that they had to stop using green at the dealership because GM said it was causing bearing failure due to the little pieces that come off and end up in the crankcase. I honestly don't know what the difference is between the two, but I just used a burgandy pad and it worked great.
