Default Rear main seal

I'm replacing the clutch and all the realted parts, included the rear main crank seal.

My old part (the engine is a 1998 LS1) has the number 12550574
The replacement seal has the part #12602972
GM sells now the same part under the #89060436

???

The older seal (12550574) has 1 lip towards the crank and one towards the outside.

The replacement part (12602972) has two lips, both towards the outside.
This seal fits perfectly, but doesn't go as deep in the seat ad the old one.

Who knows what is what?

Thanks!

Stefano

You mean #89060436?

How does it look like? Two lips to the outside or one inside and one outside?

in the GM service manual they say not to lubricate the sealing surface... do you know why? Is that important?

Do you know why GM says NOT TO OIL the sealing surface?

Someone told me that since the new seal is made from ?kevlar/plastic? that oiling the seal starts a wicking effect. I think it would cause dirt and grit to stick to that area. Thus causing an abrasive action.

If you are FI (boost) or thinking about it, these new seals WILL BLOW OUT. What we had to do is install the reverse-lip seal backwards in order to not have any leaks.

The newer seal has the number 12585671 and it looks like the older ones: the lip looks toward the inside of the engine.

And yes...I'm blown!
