I just built a new ls1 with the mods in my signature and few more goodies. The car started and ran fine and even drove around the block for a few days at night because I didn't have an inspection sticker yet approximately 10 miles. So Sunday I decide to get an inspection I get about 6 miles down the road where I hear a slight tick that changes to a loud banging. Turned around and made it home. It sounds like the valves are hitting the piston. Pulled the valve cover hoping for a loose rocker, but no luck.....I plan to pull the heads today, but am curious why it ran fine up til now.....I would think something like that would show up on initial startup. I never took the car past 3k in the neighborhood and never went past 4k driving to the inspection station. TIA

 

Did you swap springs too?? If you did(which I hope you did) you could have lost a lock or something.

With a 224 cam you shouldn't have any PTV issues with stock unmilled heads.

Yeah I have ran this cam before in my previous setup so I know it is reliable and no clearance issues.....everything was replaced pushrods, titanium retainer, 918 springs. Every piece is new except the heads and crank which where both inspected by a local performance shop

 

That still doesn't mean you didn't lose a lock after the initial test drive you took.

What about lifters?? Did you swap those out & if so, did they get pre-soaked in oil?? Could be a collapsed lifter too.
