Default TOo much gap?

I just put my top ring into the cylinder to measure the gap(I haven't touched them yet...and it is larger than .030....I am not using a squaring tool, could this cause it to read this much off?

You can slide a piston in upside down to square it up. Take the reading with the ring about 2" down in the bore...
