Exclamation How to check if engine is healthy or about to break.

I bought a second Z28 ( a 2002 with 31,000 miles ). The tranny started to act up after about 3000 miles. I sent it to sixspeedsinc and had it looked at. Long story short, it is suspected that the previous owner/owners abused the living **** out of the car. The tranny was so messed up that the person from sixspeed said they where amazed since the engine is making stock power, and the car has 31K miles ( there were parts melted to the counter shaft ).

Since the tranny was a ticking time bomb of abuse, I would like to do a full checkup on the engine to see if its about to go. All I can think of is haveing a full compresion check done. Any ideas?

Compression and leakdown test, full OBDII scan then dyno tune.

Leakdown test will tell you the condition of the bottom end as well as the condition of the valves and valveseats.

Leak down test will tell if you have "blow by" the piston rings.And if the valves are seating correctly.I.E. burnt valve, cracked ring etc...

Either way, a comp check and L/D is a good start.

Would a Chevy dealer be a good place to have these tests done, or should I bring it to a speed shop?

You can do it yourself, its really easy.

The best way is to spray a wet 250 shot of NOS. IF it holds it then its a pretty good motor.

The only way to check bearings is to rip apart the motor, which i am sure the OP does not want to do, so my logical assumption was that he wants to see if the motor is ok in terms of compression and power. I didnt say bearings anyway, i said bottom end, which includes pistons/rings.

Relax there killer.
