Have you or anyone you know ever broken an LS1 Timing chain? Im just curious how common it is, or if it even does occur?..

If it does your fooked! I have heard recently of one but cant remember the details of the car. I do remember in the conversation it being said it looked like a bomb went off in the valvetrain.
Like the oil pump its cheap insurance.

I figured it must happen. I just never see any "broke my chain" threads. Course, now that I started this thread mine will probably snap!

Ive actually know of a double roller chain breaking in an LS1. The car that it happened on had valve reliefs big enough to not cause any valvetrain damage.

Damn he got lucky on that one. So even though we have good PTVC we could still bend valves if it were to break?

Are aftermarket timing chains any better than the stock LS1? Im getting ready to install a cam, and figured that would be a good time as any to switch it out....if it is recommended.

A bent pushrod will not cause a snapped chain. I am not seeing the correlation at all.

Someone over on Corvetteforum just had one break, he was FI though. The chains like to stick to the bottom sprocket which will break it, which is one of the reasons I installed the GMPP damper when I did my cam.

The barrels on the OEM LS2 chains are much beefier than on the LS1 chains, infact the LS2 is all that is stocked now at the dealers from what I am told.

Yes, because theres always a valve open and with the timing chain not there to make sure the valves open when they're supposed to, a piston can come to TDC while a valve is all the way open. This person this happened to had a motor set up for boost I believe so his valve reliefs were bigger than normal.
