Well we finished the rebuild of my motor and got the car completely put back together and ready to start. We go to prime the oil system and cant get ANY oil pressure. We pulled the valve cover and no oil was up top....then we pulled the filter and cranked it and no oil came out. Anyone had this problem before and have any suggestions????
Thanks,
Adam

Apparently, a TON of people have the same problem with rebuilt motors.
Do a search; look for same problem in a thread last week...
A guy put in a re-built motor but no oil pressure. There are two possible sources:
The freeze plug-type things are missing from the block; they take these out when cleaning the block but not all builders replace them!!!!!
1. One is in back of the motor between the tranny and engine block ...under the flywheel...
2. The other is under the cam retaining plate...
If you had some but not enough oil pressure the likely problem is an oil pump o-ring on the oil puck up tube; If you have NO oil pressure, however, the o-ring is not the problem....
Read the earlier posts since this is just what I recall...

...a bad o-ring on the oil pick up tube would not cause the motor to have zero oil prsuure.
In fact many here have reported running their engines for months with no oil pump o-ring. ...it ussually gets pushed into the pump where it is chewed up by the pump gears.
pressure is ussually in the 20Lbs or so with no -o-ring.... normal is 40lbs or so...

...while your in there, however, remove the cam shaft retaining plate and see if the oil passage freeze plug is in block there...
...if it is, you probably missing the freeze plug thing in the rear case under the flywheel...

Beast99:
I suppose the pump and not the pump -o-ring could be bad...
maybe the pump gears were left out when they assembled the unit...
I doubt it, but a real possiblity I suppose...

Well if no oil is getting to the pump, then your search should be short. It lies somewhere between the pickup tube to the pump. One possibility is the the bottom of the pickup tube is crammed up against the bottom of the oil pan. When I built my motor, I was told by a knowledgable builder to measure and make sure there was at least 1/8" space between the oil pickup tube and the bottom of the pan. If you are sure no oil is getting to the pump, then I would say your problem lies there. How could you tell there was no oil getting to the pump?

When I assembled my motor, I put oil into the pump while it was on the stand then rotated it then added more oil and rotated it. I did this a few times. Another thing I noticed is that if you have a double roller timing chain with the spacers, there is no way the pickup tube will line up and fit correctly in the pump unless you make the mounting hole on the pickup tube elongated so it properly lines up. If you force it, you could have caused a stress crack. Also look at your pickup tube screen abd make sure it is free of debree and assembly lube. I tried to crank the motor over as well with the plugs out and everything disconnected. I couldn't get any oil up in the heads or any oil pressure either. I decided to just start it up and the oil pressure went immediately up to 60+ psi.

I just installed a new pump and a double roller with motor in the car...no problems at all. ...for this, you have to leave the pump bolts and shims out until you install the o-ring and pick up tube.. ...the tube then bends slightly when the bolts and shims go on and everything goes together right..
How do you know no oil is getting to the pump? Did your old pump have pump gears?
Did you read the other post on NO OIL PRESSURE?
They seem to point to no freeze plugs (1 under cam retainer and one under flywheel) as the likely culprets????

Ok, yeh. It could also be the oil pressure relief valve being stuck...
...but I thought you said you just re-built the motor...I assumed you are working with a new oil pump, NO???
Did the second new pump solve the problem?

we took the old one apart and it looked fine....we cranked it with both pumps and no joy....until we fired it up and got pressure with the new pump on
