Default puffs of black smoke

I have been told that I kick out puffs of black smoke at WOT. Well now I can see what people are talking about. So now my question- is it the rings I should be looking at or am I getting worked up over nothing.

Here is the video of my car on the dyno a couple months ago.

Black smoke is fuel related, not oil. Blue is oil burning. Maybe you are too rich up top.

I know it is fuel related, but I was always told that puffs of black smoke is bad= rings.

I don't think that it could be runnign too rich as I am still using the stock injectors and they are at 97% duty cycle. I am getting a the racetronics system, and some 42or 60 pounders in the upcoming month.

Typical for LS1's to smoke a little at WOT. Everyone that I know of does from time to time. Even my old LT1 did it sometimes. Just make sure your not to rich, if your A/F is good, I wouldn't worry. Sometimes if a car sits, or is babied, the first time you romp on it you will get some black smoke as well.

Well I used to baby it a little too much, but since I have a DD, when I do take it out I take it to redline everytime.

I have ran seafoam, changed the pcv valve, and it has gotten a little better but still only kicks it at WOT. I do lose some oil as well, it is kind of hard to see in the vid, but there is some white/blueish smoke as well.

I just want to be sure, before I spend some money on go fast parts, when i should be putting money toward a new motor.

So should I just step up and get some heads then. I have been thinking of getting some, and if it could solve the problem it would be well worth it.

I wouldn't think it is running rich as it still has stock injectors.

should I do a compression test, or is there anything I can do to get a idea of what is wrong w/o going into the motor?

I think its fine. Especially if the A/F looks solid.

You could still be rich even with that high of injector duty cycle.Find out what the a/f is before you start throwing parts at it.

It stays at a consistent 13.1 across the board.

I Think that I am going to pony up and get the racetronics kit and a set of 42's. I would need it for another engine anyhow, if this doesn't work.

Well, if anyone would know whether you're using oil it would be you.

Some LSx cars can go through oil pretty fast @ sustained high RPM runs w/o a trail of blue smoke.
