Yes you can use either wooden dowels or aluminum dowels to do the same thing.
5/16” or ¼” rods approx 26”

Just go to Home Depot and buy some metal rods and cut them to length.

JRP tool is a waste of money!!!!!! Just buy 5/16" wooden or metal dowels, i used wood it was easier to cut.

I bought the JPR tool years ago, but have found it doesn't work on all LS series engines. When I have trouble removing a cam with the JPR tool installed I use a 5/16" metal rods(unthreaded) @$5 each from Home Depot. If you haven't bought the JPR tooll as yet stay away from it and get the meatal rods. I'd shy away from wooden dowel because the rods are pretty hard to remove on certain engines and I'd worry about getting wood out, but steel or aluminum is going to come out even if you have to pull on it with a lot of force.

If you go with metal rods make sure to coat them with motor oil

My motor is out of the car on a motor stand. Can I just turn the motor upside down (to prevent the lifters from falling) while I'm doing the cam swap?

Yes, you can invert the engine and remove the risk of a lifter falling down. However, my concern is that any trash/metal bits/etc. that has migrated to the bottom of the oil pan (or elsewhere) will drizzle toward the valvetrain and other places where it doesn't belong.
