Default A4 Cam Selection Help Needed inside

You may have seen my previous post a few weeks ago on my H/C dyno numbers (unlocked), here is that post for those who haven't seen it.

https://ls1tech.com/threads/showflat...rue#Post564848

Anyways I didn't hit my 400 mark (cam is too small) and I really need your help in selecting the right cam. I don't want to put a cam in with a lot of lift, I also don't want to start making power at 6500. I'd like to have lots of midrange power on up. My heads are milled .030 and I plan on having Manley springs/titanium retainers & Manley hardened push rods installed at the same time for reliability.

So what cam do you guys recommend cause I don't want to make the same mistake twice. I've been looking at Thunder and Texas Speed's cam packages but its just too hard to tell without feedback from those who have an A4 with similar mods.

" don't want to put a cam in with a lot of lift"
What to you call a lot of lift? I think you will need something with over a .550 lift and at least 224* duration on both intake and exhaust to meet your goals. If you don't have to pass emissions, get the TR230.

Cal : Nothing more than .581 on a 114. I do need to pass emissions (currently OBD2 scan, expecting sniff test one day).
Ragtop99 : Ouch, the Bassani's aren't that bad are they. I thought there were ppl here running Macs and getting 400 ?

the TR230/224 isn't "high" lift but it is still recommended to change the springs every 10k or so due to the ramp rates.

If you are avoiding high lift cams due to spring stress, many of the lower lift agressive rate cams will stress the springs the same.

BTW, i'll second a vote for the TR230/224 cam. Pulls hard from 3k on up.

Better not get anything with more duration than a 224/224 on 114 then; lift doesn't matter for emissions. I don't think there is a lot of benefit HP wise going from .561 to .581 unless you have some real killer heads. I'd stay with the .561 and run Comp 918's.

Good point, gillbot. At one time I planned to order a custom Comp cam with 224/.533, but I found out a friend had one very close to that and his sounded like sewing machine as well, so I figured what the hell and ordered a TR224. Apparently ramps have more bearing on this than lift, and there's a lot of good reasons for having fast ramps.
