Default My cam vs. big boy cams.....

My car has a 4200 stall (more now since the cam), weighs about 3100# without me, and has a good exhaust (headers, duals, dumps). My cam is a 227/227 .599/.599 on a 110. It is installed dot to dot. This car is a race car I drive on the street. I am going to be installing some home ported heads soon, and I was thinking of going with a G5X2 or a 232/232 cam while I was at it. Anyone think I could get a tenth from that? Thanks a lot!

I would go for the 232 cam instead of the g5x2. the lift on the g5 is chew valvesprings up pretty good. go with the .588" XER lobe and you'll probably make close to the same hp- and put it on a 110 CL to keep the powerband down- easier on the bottom end.
that's my next cam. should make close to 420rwhp below 6600rpm with stock heads.
that's my prediction anyway. with a GOOD set of ported heads, that cam should make over 450rwhp. (my plan is the TEA stg III 6.0L heads, cut down .050")
I can't wait.... i keep talking about this setup, but i need money. i just got through coughing up $2400 for the Moser 12 bolt, so i'm gonna have to wait a while.
brent @ TEA will send these heads out for $2600 (if you return your 5.7 heads for core). that's a head that'll flow 330 cfm @.600" while MTI's stage II ($2800), flows 285-290cfm (from what I've been told- I haven't flowed a set of them myself).

back to your question- the G5X2 is a good cam, but I can't see how that much lift is necessary for a daily driven car. Duration and lobe sep. can be overcome by good programming and acceptance of choppy idle and higher idle speed. I don;t like the idea of burning through valvesprings unecessarily. the benefit isn;'t that much to warrant to me. maybe for a trailer car that is trying to suck every last hp out of the motor, and doesn;t sit in traffic, but for a street car the 5 extra power isn't really a factor that's important. that power will never come into play as much as the infinite possiblities encountered while street racing- pavement, tires, road curves, jump, oil, puddles, other cars, trash, etc...
if the car sees track only duty, then yes- suck every last drop you can out. however, a street racing car, to me, is much more set on raw power and longevity. make the car run as well as possible, but also last as long as poosible with stop lights, traffic jams, long trips, and of course- racing.

My cam already has .599" of lift on the intake and exhaust, so the extra lift isn't that big of an issue. But I do want to keep the powerband kinda low, I can't afford a new shortblock if something happens.

The G5X2 usually peaks around 6400, so it's not like you have to buzz the hell out of the motor to get the power out of it (that 6400 RPM peak is only 200 over the factory rev limiter).

For your goals, I'd go for it or 232/236.

You might consider fly cutting the pistons while the heads are off to increase your cam selection flexibility.
