Default Who has passed CA sniffer with 224 or larger cam?

i really am looking for a head cam combo, i have heard that a 224/224 114 will pass ca smog, but not from any one that actually has it. who has a cam this size or larger that has actually passed?

i want make about 400 RWHP with some stage 2.5 5.3(or LS6) heads and a smogable cam,

will a 224 make that kind of power with thoes heads?

yes a TR224 WILL pass on a 114lsa with a GOOD tune. with ehads im not sure, but ive seen quite a few threads with people asking this same question and responses from people who have it and are in cali.

A TR224 with full bolt ons can make about 400rwhp give or take a few and with heads, depending on what kind more, but tuning will be critical.

I have also seen a few threads with people from ca passing with that cam. I bet you will put down over 400 with that h/c setup. Give whoever is tuning your car a call and talk to them about it. The tune is essential to passing smog

ehh I talked to them about that 226/226 cam bout 6 motns back and they actually no longer carry it. I think 224/224 was the max that would pass anyhow

I think the average H/C setup with a 224/224/114 makes more like 425 RWHP.

I bet you a 226/226 on a 114 would pass smog with a really good tune. I seen that deal from patriot and its a good deal! If i wasn't going custom cam i would damn near jump on that deal

It is all in the overlap of the cam, if it has positive overlap (the intake and exhaust lobes "overlap" each other) it will not pass. The TR224 on a 114 has about -4 degrees of overlap. You can get up to a 228 cam on a 114 (has zero overlap) to pass, but the tune needs to be dead on. Not just WOT tuning, the tuner will need to either tune it on a load bearing dyno or on the street with a wideband to get it precise. Something I (and reputable tuners) do anyway. This is based on my experince with many setups, good luck!

I'm in CA, still deciding on a cam setup. I really want to try the hotcam, do you think this cam would be able to squeeze by at all?

Nope the hotcam has positive overlap, I don't think it would work but you could try it any way. I think I would save up for some spray or Forced Induction if I lived in Cali. Just my $.02

Or he could be like me and have both

I think if u really want to stay smog legal u should get the 224 on a 114 with the patriot heads and a 100 shot of spray. You would be plenty fast and would still pass smog.

Run patriots 225/229 on a 114. What's wrong with that one? It should make more power than the 224 and its still neg. overlap.

oh if it still has negative overlap than i think you would be happy with that. It should out perform the 224 a little bit too

You can get a 224/224/.581/.581/112LSA cam to pass smog. It is all about the tuning. Some nice ported and polished LS6 heads, LS6 manifold, and the other common upgrades should get you to 400 RWHP.

I had the TR224 on a 114 with all the bolt ons and passed Ny and Va emmissions. I was putting down 367 RWHP.

With a set of AFR heads milled . 025-030 off you'll be at 400 RWHP. Throw on a FAST 90/90 and you'll have 425 RWHP with no drivablity issues at all, and have a great running car.

hey guys, i passed CA smog 2 times with my OLD SS set-up.

here it is.

hand ported LS1 heads 10.6:1CR
comp 222/224 .566/.568 114
Ls6 intake, ported TB
FLP headers, 4:10 gears

that set-up netted me 400rwhp 375rwtq and passed the sniffer. !

now. that was about 4 years ago. so if i had to do it again today ....
(WHICH I MAY ON MY z06)

ID use some better heads 243's, TFS, DART, etc...
and a little bigger cam.... 225/225 .590/.590 114
and with an LS6 you should see 410-425rwhp.

here is my OLD graph.
