Default Claying P to V

I'm ready to check my P to V clearance. I've got weak helper springs on the #1 hole and the head on...I know I've read about this, but I really don't understand how to know for sure if I'm not just collapsing ghe lifter as I
m checking?

What is the proper method of claying for piston to valve clearance?

Tia

Are the heads fully bolted down? If yes, you can not use the clay method.

We just snugged down the bolts around #1 (30 ft-lbs with an used head gasket)

It appears I have zero clearance. I even rotated the assembly around and pushed on the rocker tip with the weak spring and it feels like it's just touching at one point...at that point I have zero clearance and then the piston drops.

What advantage exactly will a degree wheel do for this scenario?

I might be wrong, but I think you only use the checker spring if you're doing the dial indicator method.

Also, you can't use the normal hydraulic lifters to check PTV. Take an old one out, weld it fully extended, then use it as a checker. I think that's where your problems might be coming from.

Otherwise it looks good!

But wouldn't worst case as described above be too much clearance? To end up at Zero...???

A degree wheel will get you ad dead nuts center, but with the heads off a dial will do, too. You ccan get solid lifters, but its easier to weld one like he said.
