If you're on a budget have your stock heads ported. You don't have to go to an LS6 head or aftermarket cast to get decent flow. Will be more cost effective because you don't have to buy a new cast and you won't have to worry about PVC.

Well, thats JUST over the budget, but would be piece of mind knowing I have a new set of LS6 heads. There are more than a few I am finding FS used though that seem to be a bit better for less. I may shop around a bit on the used market before I decide either way.

-why not wait a bit and get the extra $95.00 for the patriot's=
thats what i would do-like u said peace of mind knowing u got a set of ls6/243 cnc ported-
thats what i would be doing
everything brand new ready to go-
nothing wrong with second hand or light usage-but u never know-u never know-
whats a extra $95.00 for better performance and peace of mind-

Thanks for the opinion, but at this point the way I am looking at it is; why spend $1100 on a new set of un-ported heads, when I can spend $750-$950 for a set of used fully ported ones that flow better?
Granted they won't be new, but that is the side I am leaning towards as of now.

I guess I don't understand how you don't consider this head high quality, it's one of the best ported OEM castings on the market. You don't get into better flow numbers until you get into the much more expensive castings.

You're not going to find high-end used heads for under $1000. Even the Patriot heads are bringing around $700, TFS and AFR heads are considerably higher. The only used heads you're going to find for under $1k are going to be ported stock castings or maybe a set of unported aftermarket castings.

Definately look at the PRC Stage 1 LS6 heads. At 1049 they are right in line price wise & they make awesome power! You can even checkout GM High Tech magazine where a ms4 & stage 1s made over 550flywheel horsepower! Power like that makes these heads the best valve by far compared to similar priced competition!

Why even do heads if you're going to cheap out? Look for some used PRC 5.3L's

As of now I'd like to keep where I am finding these quiet as they do seem to be smokin deals (possibly too good to be true).
The other thing that I need to find out is what needs or will for sure require the pistons to be flycut? This doesn't need to be done with say a set of stock heads, but depending on the clearances some aftermarket heads will be a must, and its an additional $400+ cost I am trying to avoid if neccisary, and may be key in what heads I do end up purchasing.
