Default Best heads to get for under 1k?

Obviously used will be the best deals to have, but I am having a hard time even finding used heads for under $1,000.

What would be the cheepest heads to get that would be an upgrade from LS1 heads? I am guessing just LS6 heads, but I have yet to see any.

I may have asked this too much in advance. I will be getting the MS4 cam, and I think the heads have to be something specific for them to work with that cam. Sorry about not knowing the exact details, I'll do some more research and find exactly what kind of heads or what needs to be done to heads to make it work.

(If anyone knows what I am talking about, please feel free to post)

LS6 are gonna be your best bet, just make sure if you get some used ones that they havent been milled or anything in case you will be tight on PTV

Well, if I can find some much better flowing heads that are barely used for the same or less, I would rather go that route. However, not ever having purchased used heads before, is there a significant risk with people selling damaged or faulty heads on here? Maybe I would be better off looking at some new ones. I really am just trying to get the best deal I can for some decent heads that will help the MS4 cam out in my car.

Ask an engine builder. The proper way to pick parts is to get your heads, and get a cam that matches the flow of the heads. Not pick a cam then get heads that fit it. The idea is that with good heads you don't need a big slobbering stupid cam to make good power.

Ideally you are correct. However I already know I want the cam due to its characteristics and powerband. So call me backwards, but I am picking heads to help the cam, not a cam to help the heads. TSP has used this cam in tons of cam only (stock heads) cars with great results. However given the size of the cam, it only makes sense to want to up the heads as the stock ones will be starving several potential ponies to the wheels.

I found the verbage I was looking for. There are possible clearance issues with the heads and this cam with the potential to hit the pistons. So, certain heads (especially those that have been milled) may lead you to flycut to keep things safe.

Get ahold of Gunner at Patriot Performance. They've got a sale on their heads right now and sure he can hook you up with something. They also have brand new unported 243 castings bare for around $400.

TSP should be able tell u what of their heads will work with that big cam without flycutting the pistons.

I looked and didn't see any set of heads for under $1,800 on their website. This is WAY past what I am wanting to spend on heads.

There was a big discussion on this in another thread. Some heads will require the pistons to be flycut for clearances, but some, as close as they are will not. The thread went into a bit of detail about how close the clearances were without flycutting in some applications, however out of the numerous people who posted, none actually stated they had issues with not flycutting.

Here's the thread for reference> https://ls1tech.com/forums/showthrea...&highlight=ms4

Flycutting is simple and cheap peace of mind. No reason not to.

Keep in mind this is all for a "budget". Meaning if I could get heads that didn't require me to flycut the pistons, that would be ideal as it would save me on the flycutting.

Some might argue that flycutting the pistons is a "must" or "added insurance" for all heads, but I don't agree that this is necissary for all heads.

Not necessary, but of course you want to get the most from your setup. So you'll mill the heads instead if just refusing the extra power. That would be a waste.
