Default Heads for a Budget

Well Im starting to work on the parts list for my h/c build up. Im working on a "budget" per say. I dont want to cheap out, but Im not in the position to spend $1500-$2000 on a set of heads. Ive been lurking in the for sale section and have seen quite a few different sets of heads and have some questions.

Overall from what Ive read the ported 243s (LS6 heads) are some of the best to look at. After that the ported 241s (LS1 heads) and the ported 5.3L (not sure of the casting # for those) heads are pretty much equal. What are the 317 heads and how do they compare to the others?

My second question is how do the different port jobs differ from one another (stage I,II,III)? On the average what is the difference, power wise and economically, from going up a stage?

My plan is to go with a good DD cam on a high 22x to low 23x intake and a low to mid 23x exhaust on a higher LSA. Any suggestions for what might match up well to that would also be welcome. Thanks a lot!

Stages are usualy relative to valve size. in general (varies from vendor to vendor) but stage 1 is stock valves (2.00/1.55), Stage 2 (2.02/1.57), stage 2.5 (2.04/1.57 or 2.055 1.57), stage 3 (2.08/1.57 or 1.6)

As you go up in sizes add about ~5 +/- cfm

317s are 6.0 castings (LQ9) and are 72cc, mostly chosen for boost unless they have welded chambers.

There are quite a few vendors offering fully loaded heads for less than $1500, to name a few Patriot Performance, Livernois, TEA, MTI, TSP etc.....

We can get you a set of our PRC Cylinder heads for $1500. 5.3L or LS6 heads are available in stage 1 and stage 2.5 are both in your budget. Give me a call and we can discuss your setup and get you a set of heads to meet your needs. Check out the sponsor sale section as well. We have some crazy deals going through the end of the year!
