Default LQ4 Cam Choice

I'm gonna be swapping in a 03-05 LQ4 into my 88 Monte SS. Car weighs 3450 with driver. I run a 3200 stall 9.5" Converter, built 2004r, and 4.10 geared rear. The motor will get a Edelbrock Victor Junior intake and MSD 6010 control box. It will also get 1 3/4" long tubes and a 2.5" xpipe. The motor will remain stock other then the cam and related hardware. I'll be putting in ARP rod bolts at the same time.

The car will see some street duty and will also be raced quite often.

I'm looking for a cam that will still give decent driveability but result in some great power from the 6.0. Heads and shortblock will remain stock so the cam must clear the factory pistons. Basically, I'm looking to push the powerband up some, yet keep the shortblock together.

I've been looking at cams out there and I'm wondering if a 230/236 would be too large.

Any and all cam suggestions and power estimates would be great.

Thanks guys
Nick

I would go with something like a 224/230 with about a 113 LSA and no more than a .550' lift for what you are talking about. The stock 317 casting heads won't flow adequately for a cam any larger in my opinion. You will benefit from a dual pattern cam because of the intake:exhaust flow ratio on the stock heads. You need to replace your springs, push rods and valve seals while you are at it.

These are just my opinions.

I was actually looking at the TR230/236. It has .592/.602 on a 112 LSA. I would go with the TR kit that includes pushrods, springs, retainers, seals, and cam. I understand stock heads might not flow up over .550 but the cam will allow me to do a heads swap later keeping the same cam.

Using stock style head gaskets, no milling, how much lift can the stock shortblock take?

Thanks
Nick

stock 6.0 heads flow pretty well. we are running a small boost cam in my lil bros truck 220/222 585/585 114+5 i know the LSa wont be needing but it pulls like crazy. in an extened cab Z71. iam thinking 228/232 585/590 on a 113lsa with the XER lobes thats just my opinion tho

i think that cam would do pretty well, plus put a set of ls1 heads on and get that compression ratio up

For now, its just a cam swap, maybe a thinner head gasket to gain a little compression.

Keep em comin

Happy Holidays guys

Your setup is close to mine, and that cam should give you great results. The LQ4 really shines with a 230+ cam, as you can see by my sig. The 317 heads flow similar to LS6 heads, but they have larger combustion chambers. Good luck!
