Default Oil Pump Porting How-to

I put this document together detailing how to port and shim an LSx oil pump. I know there has been many threads on this, but not all of the right information in one place. Enjoy

Big thanks to Vettenuts for the excellent feedback and content contribution.

This is an excellent summary regarding the porting of a factory oil pump. I was pleased to see that you referenced my write-up and pictures from a while back in this forum.

I've bought a new high volume Melling oil pump which I also plan to disassemble and port prior to installation when I build up my stroker engine. The Melling came in a couple of weeks ago and I was surprised to see that it is cast iron instead of an aluminum casting like the factory pump. However, I can see why they chose cast iron as it is more wear resistant.

Once again, my highest complements on the Adobe Acrobat Document on oil pump porting!

All my best,

Steve

Dumb question,but...

Would porting a 98-00 Pump benefit and allow me to not buy a new one?Or should I just buy a newer better unit and then port it?

I would suggest you start with an LS6 pump. The pre-LS6 pumps have a lower bypass pressure and would have to be shimmed more. They also have a smaller outlet port at the block mating surface.

Just the cover is cast iron. The pump body is aluminum.

Thought I would bring that back to the top for the benefit of those asking questions concerning the oil pump.
