Default oil pickup tube bolt!!!

Ok, I'm down to the last few turns to remove the oil pickup tube bolt, but I can't for the life of me figure out how I'm gonna get it back in with my fat fingers... Jesus... I got a rag stuffed in there but I know that little %@!@% is gonna end up in the oil pan....

use a stiff wire of some sort to wrap around the bolt. it'll prevent it from falling into the pan, and can help you guide the bolt into place. once the bolt is started you can remove the wire.

thats what i did, over-kill, maybe, but it worked.

One of the Crane installation instructions for their LS1 timing chain recommends a fishing line around the bolt and then around another bolt screwed into the block until it is almost all the way in. This prevents it from falling in the pan. Use a rag under it too if it will fit. I started mine carefully by putting it in the end of the ratcheting box wrench.

thats what i did, used a piece of 16 gauge solid wire and pulled it free once the bolt was in a few threads

Just take your time with it and have a rag stuffed in so it cant fall past the windage tray. Then have a magnet on hand. Good luck

I appreciate it, you all gave me the confidence to go for it. I had deciced I'd look at it again this AM -and if I wasn't comfortable with it, and I liked the way the current chain looked as far as wear - I'd just bolt it back together.
I wrapped some thick sewing thread around it and took it out. I raised the car enough I could sit up and look at the pump and using a needle nose plyers, a screw driver, and the sewing thread teather I was able to re-install it. I almost pinched my new o ring- but I spotted it before I damaged it, pulled the tube down somewhat to center the tube and the o ring snapped up inside the bore correctly.
I will be watching startup closely for oil pressure though!!

Thanks all....

I sued fishing wire and tied a simple knot around it. it can fall all it wants but youve got the string tog et it back, and comes off easy when putting it back in
