Default Replacing Crank/pulley seal On car?

Can this be done? Looking at it, I say yes, but friends say no way. I think you should be able to pull the pulley off, and pullthe seal, replace seal and reinstall pulley. Might have to loosen cover bolts to "center" the pulley int he seal, but anyone done this???

If you're there that far torn down, why not just pull the damn thing off and do it correctly?

Well the way I see it, it seems possible to pull the belts, and then the pulley while on ramps/stands. Just dont know if the seal will come out easy enough I guess. If it does, this too would be the right way!

You have to pull the pulley off, the water pump, and the front cover.

If you don't want to do that, there's probably a seal puller that'd let you pull it with the timing cover in place and then you'll need something to help you tap the new seal in. Its a PAIN to get that seal out sometimes so it may just be easiest to suck it up and remove the pump and front cover.

it was a PAIN to get the old one out of my cover and I had it off the car on a bench where I could really go to town on it!!!

If you need to replace the seal, I vote do it right and pull the cover.

Drats....thats what I thunk too! Thought maybe there was a trik way to cut it off, and seat the new seal then just put the pulley back on. Dang it. Ok, thanks guys!

Oh yeah, do you just put the cover back on, tighten and then pulley, or leave the cover loose, put pulley? I seen a post about this, but since you guys have doen it already, thought I would ask. Also, use silicone on the bottom of the cover to oil pan or no no??

I put a little instant gasket around the edge of the cover (to make sure it sealed) and installed it tight. Then when I got to putting the crank pulley on I just installed like normal.

Put a little oil on the seal both when your putting it in the cover and then some one the seal and the pulley when you put the pulley on. This will make everything go together easier.

Do not tighten the cover before you install the pulley unless you have the magical GM timing cover alignment tool. Put the cover on and just start the threads on all the bolts, THEN install the pulley, THEN tighten all the bolts. That way it makes the seal a bit more centered on the pulley. I've never had an issue doing it that way.

well, so the issue sems to be this:

With a brand new seal, you dont have to center the cover. If you are going to pull off the timing cover and then reuse the seal, you need to have it centered, either with the fancy tool, or by not tightening the bolts on the cover until you put the pully on.

I reused my seal after a cam change and did not use a tool or put the pulley first. I stuck my big head in there and "eyed" it. Stick all the bolts in, make sure the seal is somewhat centered, and tourque down bolts. I havent leaked a thing. The cover moves a bit but not that much, it is possible to do it by eye.
