You usually don't need to key the crank unless you are running a blower.

The crank has a key in it already but is liminted in the area of the lower timing chain gear. Too bad GM didn't bring the grove all the way to the front of the shaft. The crank pulley would be easier to get on and off were it keyed verses interference fit.
