Default Cracked block help????

Hey guys I started to install my heads tonight on my shortblock that I got from a friend when on the #5 cylinder on the outside of the block I started to see some fluid push out.. I did not tighten the bolts I ran them down by hand and luckly seen this.. I pulled the head back off and compressed air in the hole and was able to push air out of a small pin hole on the outside. It looks to be only on the outside so any ideas on what to do will help.. It was possible that it happened when he pulled it out of his car with the plates he made..

uhh, it's also possible that there was coolant in the holes the last time someone tightened the head bolts. The bolt holes are blind - they do not open to the water jacket, so any fluid in them gets compressed and can crack the block.

I believe there are dyes and lights you can use to inspect a crack. Since its aluminum, you can get it welded and have the threads repaired, but it sucks that you just bought it.

A block just dosent get a pin hole in it man.

no thats what we are thinking. when he pulled it out there might of been fluid in it cause its one of the holes he used to pt the brackets on it he made to pull it out,, wih air compressed to it it is only pushing out very very little...so i guess if its on the outside i might be able to repair it???

I thought of that but just makes me learyy.....If the bolt holes are blind then I dont think I should hae anything really to worry about should i.

You can't run it if it's cracked. IMO it's scrap.

Cracked LS1 block? It's worth some money for aluminum scrap. Beyond that, get a new block man. You'll be more annoyed when you have to pull it back out again anyway.

Everyone is all to quick to yell scrap when these threads pop up. Have any of you ever tried repairing the hair line cracks in these blocks? It can be fixed by a welder who knows their ****. You may need to hone the block afterwards due to the extreme heat of the welding slightly warping the cylinder liner, but that can only be verified by checking after the welding is done. Don't freak out just yet, call around and see if you can find a machine shop that feels comfortable doing the repair for you.

Ya I have some calls made.. Maybe at this point I would be better throwing my 243' on the 98 motor I just pulled out off the car.. It has 93k on it nothing wrong with it just wanted an updated motor and cant really afford a new shortblock right now
