Default PTV clearence questions

I have an F14 which is something like 232/234 .609/.598 on a 112+2... I also have the texas speed 2.5 5.3 heads that have been milled 30 thousandths... I want to know if anyone thinks the will clear or will fly cutting be needed... I really don't want to fly cut anything because i want to run a 150 shot on top of it and i don't want to make the pistons any weaker... I know there are thicker and thinner gaskets out there, would this setup work if i used a thick gasket? so someone help me out...

Do it right the first time and check the PTV clearance or have it checked by somebody that knows what they are doing.

I just went through a similar situation and when it came down to it I had the PTV clearance checked out. I am glad I did because I found out my pistons hit the valves.

I think you might have been able to get by with a .040 gasket (stock is like .054), but I seriously doubt it will clear (at least with the .080/.100 recommended clearance) with a .030 mill. Whatever you decide, I would also advise you to check it.

Verifying your PTVC needs to be factored into the swap. If I was a bett'n man...you'll be cutting pistons.

I would place bets that you are too close for comfort with that cam and the heads milled. If I remember correctly, the 5.3 heads have tighter valve clearance to begin with compaired to a 241 head.

I'd reconsider your setup if you don't want to flycut, and you want to run those heads, with that cam, aaaand spray a 150 shot. That sounds like the recipe for a new motor.

Just to give you an example, I have a TR224/224 .570/.569 112+4 lsa cam along with ported heads that are milled 0.037" with 2.05 intake valves (typical aftermarket sized valve) and with weak springs I had valve float and kissed all 8 pistons leaving tiny little eyebrows on all of them.

You've got a bigger cam, with similar amount milled off the heads so I'd suspect that you are cutting it close, too close for comfort in my book.

that's what i was planning on, but i figured if i'm going to do that i'm going to run a ms4... so why not just throw the f14 in there now... but then i got to thinking why not just throw it all in there, and use some afr's on the new motor... thing is i don't want to buy head gaskets and bolts then pull the heads and find out it won't work... then i'm going to be pissed because i've wasted time and money on nothing.... i might look into fly cutting but i really really didn't want to do that.... maybe i'll just sell my heads, and get a different set... even though i've spent and 400 dollars on them to have a guy go through and hand port them....

If you buy MLS head gaskets, along with ARP bolts of even better studs, you can re-use them. Pay me now, or pay me later. That's why I went with ARP studs because I know my heads are going to be coming off sometime in the future, so I might as well save the threads in the block from anymore stress than necessary.

I've seen MLS gaskets in sizes from 0.040 up to 0.065.

Can you reuse them? I think you can unless they get damaged when the head is taken off. But again, it depends on your application. If you are running a lot of nitrous or boost, where you risk lifting a head, I guess you shouldn't, but for a normal H/C setup, I'd say it's ok.
