Default Big cam = no ASR?

Been having ASR issues lately after the cam install. If the car idles for a period, the ASR off light on the cluster illuminates. The weird thing is, if you do some sort of odd combination involving the Radio on/off and the AC, the car will either die (not sputter out, just die) or the ASR will begin to work again.

I haven't been able to get the car to die lately but the ASR off light seems to illuminate more often than before with less idle time. If you shut the car off then restart it, it works fine 99% of the time after that (like a reset).

It only seems to give me fits after or during long trips, but I have yet to determine the cause. You would think if it was a sensor issue, the ABS Inop light would illuminate as well.

Any ideas?!?!?!?!

It was fine for a while after the cam was first installed, then it did it at random but very seldom. Now it seems to happen within minutes of starting the car and rather frequently.

i had a similar problem once when i left my MAP sensor unplugged accidentaly. though the light came on a few seconds after the car started and every time in my case.

Im wonering if you arent making enough vacume at idle and after a while the computer thinks the sensor is bad

I was thinking Vacuum myself, but why would anything TCS/ASR need Vacuum? I thought they only went off of the ABS wheel sensors?

thats what I thought untill I had the MAP problem happen... for whatever reason it DOES need that signal. I have no clue why as soon as I plugged it back in, the ASR started working normaly

I've noticed here recently cause of rainy days I leave ASR on and I have found several instances where it has turned itself off and when I come to a complete stop it turns itself back on.

I am hoping someone knows what is causing this.

I had a similar problem after my h/c install. Even after ls1edit, my car had cold start problems. It would start, surge and die. But, after getting my car started, I noticed my asr would be on (I have the TCS reversal switch so normally my TCS is off at startup). It would always do this after the car died. Now for the most part, I can get the car to start on the first try w/o dieing, and I haven't seen the tcs problem since.

Mine does cold starts like a champ, hot starts are a different story. My ASR usually messes up most often after a hotstart, or a long idle session.

Have you rechecked your wiring. Did you move or bang into any wiring during the install such that you have a loose connection?

Are you running stock tires?
what changes did you make to your tuning after the install?

stock tires and not sure about the tuning, a local guy did it.

It was fine at first and for a long time, then lately has gotten progressively worse. Just looking for ideas on what i should check.

i had the same problem with my car. on the driver side their is ground wire in front of the strut tower. turn the key off, I think its 10mm nut pull everything out, clean the surfaces to get good ground. and put everything back. that solved the problem on my car. that wire is the ASR ground wire. hope that solves the problem.

Sorry to bring up an old post, but after doing some searching about this annoying problem, I found out others are having just about the same problem as me. Does anybody out there think that a bad-fitting lid would cause this problem? My TSP lid doesn't fit the greatest with the bellow. Looks really good but doesn't fit too good. I know there are some air leaks with it. When I hit the throttle, I hear a big suction sound first, then the rev of the engine. Sometimes throttle surges on startup too. Any ideas for us having this problem?

heh make sure the po didn't install the SLP ASR doohickey

tuning and surging, thats the fun part of any a4.

When you get your car smooth as buttah at 900rpm(3.42) at 35mph locked up in 4th without surging, you da man.

"We gotta raise the lockup point" <-- Run from tuner

Thumbs up

I foudn the answer to this a while back -

You need to change the values for P0121 code MAP window.

Larger cams produce less vacuum at idle (and consequently higher MAP values).

The computer does a speed density verification (which uses MAP values) against what the MAF (among other things) is reading and tries to make sure eveything jives. When the MAP value is skewed it will cause the ASR/TCS problem as well as issues/codes for the throttle position sensor (P0121).

The fix is in changing the MAP values/window in the P0121 code. Do a search for P0121 in the tuning section for more info.

Thanks for the feedback guys! I'm going to switch out my POS Granatelli MAF with my stock one. (Newbie mistake #1) Since I don't have a cam or tuning equipment yet, hopefully the MAF is causing the headache. I'll see what happens.
