Default zo6 cam question

I was thinking about putting the zo6 cam and springs in my 98 ws6. Im just looking for a small 30-40 hp gain. Does anyone have any input? The car is my daily driver so im not looking for a huge cam. I have an intake, y pipe, and a magnaflow cat back. Any help would be great thanks a lot guys.

Be ready. You're gonna get a thousnad posts telling you that a swap to that cam isn't worth it, you'll make more power with cam x for about the same cost. Bottom line...it's true. There are a hundred other cams on the market that'll work better for about the same money and drive just like stock. Just do a search and you'll see what I mean.

On top of that, your small 30-40 hp gain isn't going to happen with the LS6 cam - probably about 1/2 that. If you want those gains, you're probably going to need some good heads along with your mild cam.

Look for something like a Comp 214/220 114+3 XE custom grind. Mild enough that it won't lope noticeably, but should make more power than the LS6 cam.

I have put this cam in a couple of f-body cars and had very good results considering its a stock 0E cam. They have put down on the dyno 370 to 380 with a little computer tuning but they had just about all the bolt ons(headers, exhaust, ect). I always put the Comp Cam 918 springs and 7.40 pushrods. Car run low 12 and high 11 on Drag Radials and are 6 speeds with gears (3.73, 4.10)and pretty good drivers. Good Luck on your decision.

I agree on this point. My car with an LS6 longblock (2001+ cam and 243's) and bolt-ons put 373hp to the rollers. Those 806 heads aren't even as good as the 853/241's in stock form.

Well I'm in a similar situation though the cam is laying around and not costing me anything so finding another cam for a price of about $0 is quite difficult. That being said if the 241 heads are milled, how far should they go to achieve close to 11.0-1 compression and what would be the suggested pushrod length to accommodate the milling? Should be a decent increase in power to get me out of the hole till the nitrous kicks in.

I would mill your heads roughly .020 to get a 64cc combustion chamber, then run a .040 thick head gasket for the best quench. The base circle on the LS6 cam is smaller than the LS1 cam. GM used the same length pushrods with a slightly taller valve to keep everything in check. Since you are removing roughly .034", you should be pretty close with a stock length pushrod. It would be a good idea to measure lifter preload and check the wipe pattern on the rockers to be sure.

All that being said, even though the 241 heads sitting around are also complete should I look into new springs, hardened pushrods, and/or possibly lighter valvetrain components, or would that be a little unrealistic for the goal of a street cruiser on the bottle?

You'll probably have to upgrade the springs, and pushrods aren't a bad idea at all. If you want the lighter valvetrain components, just get a set of LS6 heads from Patriot Performance. I keep seeing them on here for ~ $400. They'll have the smaller chambers, better ports, and should have the lighter valves (not sure on the last part, ask Gunnar).

Granted its always easier to buy something thats on the forum thats been proven time and again, but I have some things lying around. I can clean up the 241's and replace my 853's for the price of head gaskets and fluids so I don't see spending $400 on heads with a history that I am not sure of. If I am leaving power on the bench so be it, I will be 23 in under 2 weeks and would like to get some out of what I have instead of jumping into my "I want to move out of my parents basement and buy a house" fund.

Ls6 cam is perfect for a daily driver, the extra 500 rpm and 25-30 hp is well worth it

Who the **** wants to change springs every 20000 miles on a big cam? There's a million reasons not to get a cam if its your daily driver.
