rev limiter should have not let it rev that high unless it was done during a downshift

My roomate pulled the famous 3-2 shift in my car and 6 of the 8 pistons mated with their valves.

Mechanical overrev. Meaning downshifting into a too low a gear for rpm sustained. Like going from 3rd to 2nd instead of 4th at full WOT

well I know when my friend was driving he did downshift and reved it right before dumping the clutch... as far as rev limiter goes, i'm honestly starting to think my car doesn't have one, i don't ever remember hitting it before...?
