Question on Patriot LS6 Stage II heads w/225/229 cam
#22
I think its bullshit that patriot says "Ls6 style" head. It can be very misleading. Thats marketing for ya. I have heard good things about patriot as a company. Dan (Fotoboy) put down 439, but that was in a vette which tends to dyno higher. Patriot or TSP, really can't go wrong with either. I have noticed higher dyno results with PRC (TSP) heads though on average.

Matt, the 6.0L and LS6 head have the same port shape, but they are a different casting number. I am not sure which casting Patriot uses for their "LS6" head.

To continue beating a dead horse..take some time and do a seach for TEA info on here, I think you will like what you find, or check their website totalengineairflow.com ...my old ss did 420rwhp with the magic stick 3 and the stage 1.5 5.3L heads and basic boltons. Not too bad for a 3500 stalled auto. Keep in mind too though that KrisRs Z06 did 414 with just a HiTech cam and headers. The most cost effective way to make nice power is a set of take off LS6 heads ($500) and a nice cam. You'll end up with about $1500 into the whole swap, not a bad choice either.

What make a LS6 head? LS6 heads = 243 casting with better valves. That's it compared to basic 243 castings used on later Corvettes & GTO's. Infact 035, 317, and 243 castings all share the same intake and runner design. That is what makes the 243 (or LS6 style) better than the 853, 806, 241. Now the main difference in the 243 heads and the other 2 castings (035 & 317) is in the combustion chamber size. The 243 has the smallest being ~ 64cc. This is why they can say "LS6 style" & still be correct.

On Patriots "LS6 STYLE" heads they used 035 castings which had 72cc chambers from GM. Patriot then welded up the chambers , re heat treated them and machined the chambers to the smaller cc chambers of either 59cc or 64 cc's. They achieved these smaller chambers without milling the deck surface so, in my opinion these are actually better than 243 castings because you can run a little bigger cam and a thinner head gasket and still have sufficient p/v clearance . Also, pushrod length was not affected with these either because the deck thickness was not changed .On the 243 castings with 59 cc chambers , they were milled to get the smaller chambers, so you may or may not need to get different pushrods depending on your set up . Just something to think about !

I understand that the valve diameter is 2.02 on certain ones as well as the chambers being offered in different sizes. I also know that Patriot heads use Ferrea valves which kill around 0.020" over stock valves in the same diameter plus you have larger valves which will add to that. To me the math just doesn't add up. Even with your cam ground on a 112 LSA with no advance ground in, and not advanced upon install I don't see it having 0.070" clearance with stock heads/gaskets.

Back on '06 I spoke to Gunnar at Patriot and I was told the LS6 style heads were not made from the 243 castings. I don't know if they changed since then. I know you can get new 243 castings from Patriot for about $450 but they are the LS2 (4" bore) version. If you check Byunspeed.com they list the patriots as LS6 "style" heads..quotation marks and all. It just seems fishy to me. My personal opinion is the patriots are a wham bam thank you mam type head.

What is the difference between LS6 heads and 243 castings for a 4.00" bore block? Can they not be used on a 3.90" bore?
I do think something must have changed on what they use for LS6 heads because if it hasn't, they are falsely advertising and surely it would be big news here... Straight from their site, they call them:
"Patriot Performance CNC Ported 243 LS6 / LS2 2.02"/1.57" 64cc Heads Assembled"
Comes down to money in the end, as always. I only have so much. The GTA is trans-less and unfortunatley I seem to have spent the money I got when I sold the T56 out of it on this that and the other thing and furniture... So funds for upgrading the 99 are kind of limited and the whole project is kind of down on the list. I mean it did put down 347 RWHP as it sits at Rippie's... I should be happy with how well it is performing, right?...lol....

We'll see how things shake out here. I will know more about my budget after this week is over .
