rear cover question

rear cover question

Iam new to the ls1, Iam good with getting the engine built myself but theres a plastic plunger like part in the back of the engine, maybe for oil or something. What is this , whats it do, and does it just sit in there or ride on something in the rear cover. I dont have the rear cover yet so i cant see for my self and cant find a picture of what go's on the rear cover.

Its a plastic plug that screws into the back of the block. Without it you wont have oil pressure.

Dont think it screws on there but it does pop into place. And yes, without it you wouldnt have oil pressure.

it's sitting flush with the back of the block, what holds it in so it wont fall out, or does it push in more. cant seem to find any info on the rear of the ls1 engine

Where it sitting is fine. Dont push it in past the block.

make sure it's in the right way (it matterss which end the plunger is on, and no, I don't remember which). The rear cover holds it in place. All this does is divert the oil to the filter and back out. Without it though there will be no oil pressure as the oil will just be pumped out the oil galley via the rear cover.... Not a pretty idea.
